This step is part of Nigeria’s commitment to international maritime safety standards and transparency. Dr. Dayo Mobereola, NIMASA’s Director-General, confirmed that the helicopter’s black box, as well as other crucial components like the rotor, blades, and cockpit panels, were recovered through a coordinated effort involving NIMASA, the Nigerian Navy, Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB), NNPC, and other partners. The helicopter crashed 1.4 km from the FPSO vessel NUIM ANTAN, owned by NNPC. The investigation received initial distress signals on October 24, 2024, and led to swift recovery actions, with over 80% of the wreckage now located. Mobereola commended the inter-agency collaboration and reiterated NIMASA’s commitment to uncovering the cause and ensuring preventive safety measures.
