Today is the world day for safety and health at work. In 1974 the UK introduced the Health and Safety at Work etc Act. Just 3 years later we recognized the power of trade unions in helping to support and challenge employers with the creation of the Safety Representatives and Safety Committees Regulations. It took until 1996 to work out what to do in workplaces that did not have trade unions - a weaker set of regulations based on elected workplace representatives but without the resources and back up that our trade unions and the TUC, STUC, GFTU provide. When you go in to work checkout the "health and safety at work - what you need to know" and find out who is your health and safety representative. If the box is empty - ask why.

We are working hard to improve working conditions in our supply chain! In January 2024, we trained our buyers on human rights and labour standards during several workshops. Within those three weeks, our buyers refreshed their knowledge on the social principles of the Worlée Supplier Code of Conduct and on their link to international labour standards. With the help of case studies, role-plays and group work our buyers learned how to identify and address non-compliances with our Code of Conduct, e.g. violations of occupational safety regulations, with our suppliers when visiting them on-site. In addition, they learned how to eliminate non-compliances in collaboration with the Worlée Corporate Responsibility team and our suppliers. With this new and standardized training format, Worlée reaffirms its commitment to protect human and workers rights in its supply chains. We believe that together, we can achieve improvements in the working conditions of the people, who are working with us in our supply chains every day, and thus build more stable value chain in future. Starting May 1, workers can choose a representative during inspections, ensuring safer workplaces. This rule empowers workers and saves lives. 🛠️💼 David Williams, a Dollar Store General employee and worker leader with Step Up Louisiana and National COSH, shared his experience: “Having someone with you who you trust during an OSHA inspection - it will help tremendously.” Safety inspections with trusted worker representatives on-site can capture firsthand knowledge about work processes and potential hazards. They can also bridge language barriers and reduce the fear of retaliation, making workplaces safer for everyone.
