"P.S. Fracked gas companies are lobbying hard at the local level, influencing municipal governments to overturn bylaws that protect our health and climate. Nowhere is this meddling more evident than at the Union of BC Municipalities. Please help to expose the corrupting influence of fracked gas companies on B.C.’s local governments? In 2020, Vancouver City Council passed a groundbreaking motion to stop using dirty fossil gas for heating and hot water in new buildings. It was a major win for the climate and public health. Vancouver took the lead among B.C. municipalities, paving the way for other communities to do the same. #Vancouverprogressive *Then in June of this year, under the leadership of a controversial new mayor, this critical step towards decarbonization and safer homes was overturned. The company that lobbied for this rollback was FortisBC. And now the gas giant is busy trying to undermine climate action in more B.C. communities. The company especially likes to wield its influence at the annual Union of BC Municipalities conference, coming up next week. For years, oil and gas companies like FortisBC have been major sponsors of the UBCM. It costs them peanuts to pay for social mixers, dinners, swag bags and more. In return, they get prime access to our decision makers. But this year local leaders are pushing back, and we want to support them. Councillors from Vernon, who have been on the front lines of climate breakdown, are leading the way to get fossil fuel sponsorship out of local government. They’ve drafted a motion for delegates to vote on at the UBCM. Help to reach mayors and councillors with a message calling out the corruptive influence FortisBC and other fossil fuel companies have as sponsors of these events. **Fortis makes billions selling dirty fossil fuel that makes people sick. Let’s make Fortis a dirty word in city halls across the province. #acrossCanada #acrossworld Thanks for your help!! P.S.
