I believe the U.S. is falling behind Asia in access to credit—a gap that presents a significant opportunity for GMI Capital. Having traveled the world and drawing from my own experiences, I see a better way forward. While the U.S. market is often hailed for its mature private credit model, this reputation stems largely from market size, diversity, and an institutional investor base. Over the last week there has been a lot of media coverage regarding UniCredit building up of a substantial equity position in Commerzbank. Also recently the former ECB President Draghi has released report underlying the importance of the EU becoming more competitive if it is to come out of the economic douldrums it currently finds itself in. Germany has generally been a country that is pro building up the EU. However, its current stance on the potential take over of a German bank by an Italian bank does not reflect this pro EU expansion. If the EU has any chance of closing the gap of economic growth with the US it must think big and that implies supporting big cross border mergers which will activate economic growth. One of the great weaknesses of the EU has been its inability to create a deep capital market like the US capital markets. The EU has a population of just under 450 million and the US around 330 million. The EU is a wealthy region but this wealth does not translate into a strong industrial and services economy like the US has because of outdated and restrictive regulations which prevent the efficient flow of capital across the EU.
