Today is National First-Gen College Student day! Shoutout to Shubitha Kever for putting together a wonderful staff training and celebration this week at PFW. 🥳 As a first-gen graduate myself, please be sure to celebrate those students in your own life. Here's some info! While 54% of students are first-gen nationally, only 20% graduate and 28% are over 30 years old. Common characteristics: • Curiosity & Creativity • Resilience & Independence (even at a fault) • Resourcefulness and high relational currency • High Context Individuals Common barriers: • Limited knowledge of campus resources and less likely to seek advising or health services • More likely to need to work fulltime and to have children • 'Breakaway guilt' due to upward mobility within their family • Lower socioeconomic background, entrance exams, and access to basic needs • Limiting beliefs, anxiety, burnout First-gen means that neither of your parents obtained a 4-year degree. Are you first generation?

These tempered growth rates reflect a world in economic flux, impacted by supply chain disruptions, geopolitical tensions, inflation, and climate-related risks. Key Challenges for McKinsey’s..how to mitigate them...... 1. Learning from Failures Across Emerging Markets and Sectors Competing with McKinsey requires specialized knowledge across diverse sectors and regions. However, aspiring firms often overlook region-specific complexities, misjudge regulatory environments, or fail to recognize nuanced market trends. 2. Avoiding Overreliance on Technology While technology integration is essential, over-reliance on data and automation can undermine the value of consulting if insights lack human context. 3. Overcoming Missteps in Sustainability and Resilience Strategies Aspiring firms frequently face challenges in delivering robust sustainability strategies, often due to insufficient expertise in ESG and the complexities of transitioning business models toward environmental responsibility. Without deep ESG knowledge, these initiatives can come across as superficial, potentially damaging client trust. Firms aiming for McKinsey’s level must commit to understanding sustainable practices thoroughly and avoid the pitfalls of “greenwashing,” focusing instead on measurable, impactful resilience strategies. 4. Attracting and Retaining Top Talent Amidst Intense Competition Attracting top talent is a cornerstone of success, yet many firms fail to create an environment where skilled employees want to stay. Unrealistic expectations, limited growth opportunities, and lack of mentorship can drive talent to competitors. Avoiding these common failures involves fostering a culture where employees feel valued and have ample room to grow. 5. Avoiding Reputation Pitfalls and Building Lasting Trust Building a brand of trust and authority is crucial, yet some firms falter by prioritizing growth over ethics or client confidentiality, leading to damaged reputations. Missteps in these areas can be difficult to recover from, especially in a world where reputation matters more than ever. Firms aiming for McKinsey’s level must emphasize transparency, consistency, and ethical practices as core values, cultivating a brand that clients and employees respect and trust. Strategic Vision for Sustained Success To achieve the stature of McKinsey, aspiring firms must build a strategic vision that balances agility with integrity. In an era of low global growth and heightened volatility, firms that can adapt, innovate, and learn from failures as much as from successes will emerge as trusted leaders. This journey requires ongoing refinement, a commitment to learning from past missteps, and investing in emerging capabilities. The goal is to evolve into a firm that is not only a strategic advisor but also a transformative partner, guiding clients through complex economic landscapes, technological disruptions, and shifting expectations.
“It was hard to picture what I would do after college because I didn’t know anyone working in a particular field that required a college education.” As a first-generation college student, Edith turned to Braven to help her translate her passion for medicine into a meaningful career. Now training to be a pediatrician, Edith is one of many future leaders Braven has equipped with the skills, confidence, experience, and networks necessary to transition from college to strong first jobs. At DFI, we’re proud to advance high-quality, affordable pathways into teaching through Registered Apprenticeship programs. In partnership with the U.S. Department of Labor we co-chaired The Pathways Alliance working group that developed the National Guideline Standards (NGS) for K-12 Registered Teacher Apprenticeship Programs—a significant milestone that provides a robust framework for states establishing these innovative programs. With quality in mind, the NGS emphasizes essential training components like mentorship, structured learning experiences, and alignment with proven learning standards. The standards set the floor for what quality can look like in this relatively new pathway into teaching and ensure that teachers enact instruction grounded in a scientific understanding of how students learn. These Registered Apprenticeships empower aspiring educators to earn while they learn, combining coursework with structured, paid classroom experiences alongside mentor teachers. This model is especially critical in removing financial and logistical barriers, opening doors to the profession for people of color, paraprofessionals, and those with valuable classroom experience. 45 states, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico have so far established Registered Teacher Apprenticeship Programs, braiding and blending resources and support to address teacher shortages and diversify the educator workforce. We’re honored to collaborate with our partners to support and scale these programs, helping create the next generation of effective, diverse educators. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/ekQxE2FS #NAW2024
