Mandated reporting can stem from a place of concern for children's safety, but the unintended consequences are often overlooked. Consider the scenario of a mother already burdened by poverty whose child's accident prompts a report to DFCS. This sets off a chain reaction where families, already facing immense challenges, find themselves under the microscope of investigations that often bring no evidence of maltreatment. In such cases, families may feel further marginalized, distrustful of institutions meant to support them, and inclined to withdraw from seeking help altogether. This perpetuates a cycle of social isolation and exacerbates the very issues meant to be addressed. Perhaps a more nuanced approach, where professionals with existing relationships and understanding of family dynamics make judgment calls on reporting, could foster a safer environment for children? #childwelfare #familywellbeing #childprotection

Social housing for care leavers must be recognized within the protected characteristic, supported by a thorough impact quality assessment. This is crucial to hold local authorities accountable for ensuring vulnerable teenagers have safe and suitable accommodation. We cannot allow them to face homelessness or instability—every young person deserves a secure foundation to thrive. #FactsMatter. When we discuss using legislation effectively, it’s like having a screwdriver to fix a door but choosing to use your hands. Children's social care in England is in desperate need of funding and reform and is something that many children and families with TSC find themselves part of. So planned reform is welcome, in particular reducing unacceptable profiteering.
