What do you think are the biggest challenges in bioanalytics? This question was addressed by Dr. Radim Geryk, an expert in mass spectrometry from our Bioanalytical department, during his lecture at the 22nd International Summer School on Bioanalysis. The prestigious event organized this year by the Department of Analytical Chemistry, Faculty of Science, Charles University (Přírodovědecká fakulta Univerzity Karlovy), took place from July 7th to 13th, 2024, and was attended by 90 professors and Ph.D. students from 20 universities across 11 countries. Dr. Geryk's lecture on "Tasks and Challenges in Bioanalytics" sparked a fascinating discussion. Participants were particularly interested in how we achieve an ultra-trace detection limit of 100 fg/ml for certain analytes or which brands of mass spectrometers we prefer at QUINTA-ANALYTICA. Last month, we had the scientific meeting with secondees from three European Grants - SuChAQuality, FC-Relax and NMR-IMPROV - in our office. The early-stage researchers had presented the preliminary results acquired on our NMR analyzers Spin Track and SpinMate. The meeting allowed updating the studies roadmaps and enhancing findings. This year is the last for SuChAQuality grant, so we sum up the results and set new assignments for the remaining months. The research of the students from METU (Turkey) is related to the examining of (1) water and oil binding capacities of different plant proteins and (2) caking in powdered foods. Another study by the grant participant from UWM (Poland) is probing the phase transition in cholesterol. The works in the frame of NMR-IMPROV are aimed at developing methods for Quality Control of dairy products. FC-Relax doctoral candidates shared insights in the studies of (1) dynamics of protein-water systems, 'myoglobin-water' and 'trypsin-water', (2) NMR Relaxation mechanisms in biological tissues, and (3) structure and dynamics of polycrystalline polymers acquired by the advanced Time-Domain NMR experiments. Our company's mission within the grants consists in accompanying the researchers.
