🌲🏔️ As ski season approaches, it’s important to recognize the environmental and health implications of our gear—specifically the wax we use on skis and snowboards. PFAS, or per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, are toxic 'forever chemicals' traditionally found in ski wax. In fact, some ski waxes are still made from 100% PFAS 🤯 While PFAS-laden wax improves performance, they can cause severe health risks and environmental contamination (Park City contaminated aquifers anyone?!) One recent study in New England found that skiers applying wax can be exposed to PFAS concentrations as high as 100% by mass. Factors such as years of skiing experience are linked to increased PFAS levels in the body. AND PFAS levels were found to be higher among ski coaches compared to the general U.S. population. Fortunately, there’s a growing movement to eliminate PFAS from ski wax. The International Ski and Snowboard Federation banned fluorinated waxes last year, signaling a shift towards safer alternatives. Companies like mountainFLOW eco-wax pioneered PFAS-free waxes, providing eco-friendly options for skiers who want to protect both themselves and the environment. If you wax your own skis or snowboards, look for PFAS-free options and consider wearing a mask! And if you're getting your gear serviced, ASK about the wax used and advocate for safer choices. Together, we can enjoy winter sports responsibly while protecting our planet and our health! 🏂💚 #sustainability #PFAS #environmentalhealth #skiing #outdoorindustry

We didn't get it completely right this winter! Here's a story of the evolution 🐒 of our ski products? We used to only run Haute Route Ski Touring trips back in the day. We didn't get many clients and found it tricky to asses the clients ability before they arrived. It became apparent that for someone to be ready they required three things: 🏋♂️ They needed to be fit. ⛷ They needed to be able to ski in all snow conditions. 🎿 They needed to know how to ski tour. So, off the back of this we created our 'off piste skiing intro course' and our 'ski touring intro course'. Both stepping stones to prepare clients for bigger trips. (Fitness we deem 'out of our control' so put the expectation back on the client) The result: Clients are better prepared and have a more enjoyable experience. That said, it's still not perfect. The jump from these intro courses to a full weeks hut to hut experience (like the Haute Route or Otztal Ski Tour) is still big. Don't get me wrong, it's totally doable but off the back of this winter we think we can do more. For that reason we've designed our 4 day, 5 night hut to hut ski tour intro trip. A good confidence builder for those on their ski touring journey and ultimately a more enjoyable first experience of hut to hut ski touring. We hope this will be the missing piece in the ski touring puzzle. Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/ezUAKGPW

Since the presentation of the Ski Club/MTN State of the Snowsports Market at LISTEX last month I’ve had lots of conversations with friends and colleagues in the industry about the next generation of UK skiers and snowboarders. We know the average age of a UK skier is nearly 50, so what happens if we look at the responses only from those aged 18-42? 92% of those in that age group who went skiing regularly pre covid plan to go this year. But for those who don’t plan to go, the reason is not that they don’t want to, in fact 90% cite cost as the primary barrier. Over 50% will choose self-catered accommodation, with only 16% choosing a catered chalet or 4 star hotel. Top of mind factors when thinking about booking a ski holiday are personal finances followed by snow and discounts. Almost 30% plan to snowboard, and 40% would like to try ski touring at some point. France is still the most popular destination with 58%, but Austria is a strong second with 45% followed by Italy with 24% and Canada with 11%. Japan remains the dream destination for 36%. Friends and family are the most important influences for their ski holiday choices cited by 65% of respondents, but Instagram climbs fourth place at 54%, versus just 18% for Facebook… Food for thought?

Morzine, France One of France's most famous ski resorts - particularly among Brits - it combines competitive prices with one of the biggest ski areas in the world. Quite simply, there's something for everybody in the Portes du Soleil. The 650km of lift-linked pistes, which stretch across the border between France and Switzerland, make this a magnet for fans of everything from high alpine skiing to blue run cruising. There are plenty of snow parks for freestyle skiers and snowboarders, while fans of off-piste skiing will drool at the range of accessible backcountry terrain on offer — more than you could ever explore in a lifetime. Admittedly, the popularity of this vast ski area means that there are occasionally bottlenecks on the most popular ski lifts – particularly those in the resort itself, but there’s a reason to many visitors choose to base themselves in the center of Morzine. A proper town, rather than a purpose-built ski resort, it's got a year-round population and plenty of independent businesses run by locals, including an excellent local craft brewery, the Bec Jaune. Somehow, the town has managed to avoid the worst of the imitation Bauhaus building spree which swept through France in the seventies, and it's maintained its traditional, wooden chalet vibe. And while the British presence is strong (the fashion-conscious seasonaire set has even earned it the hipster sobriquet of 'Shorezine,' after London's Shoreditch) it hasn't overwhelmed what made this ski resort great in the first place.
