Last week (18-20 September 2024) I managed to attend a 3 days expert panel on NBSAPs at Pamuzinda Safaris. The expert panel consisted of various agencies from the Government of Zimbabwe which included EMA, AGRITEX, University representatives, Conservation Based Organizations and Forestry Commission. The major thrust of the 3 days caucus was hinged on revising national targets for the National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP) for each target of the Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF). Some of my key take away points were on Target 4 which focuses on Halting Species Extinction, Protecting Genetic Diversity, & Managing Human-Wildlife Conflicts. The major action points will be hinged on developing and implementing strategies to promote sustainable management practices, reducing HWC, promoting coexistence and increasing benefits accruing to indigenous and local communities by 2030.

Subsidies that harm nature, such as those in agriculture, fisheries and forestry, total around US$610 billion annually – more than four times the current biodiversity financing, which stands at $124-$143 billion per year. Did you hear about South Africa's draft National Biodiversity Economy Strategy? The South African Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) published the draft National Biodiversity Economy Strategy on 8 March 2024 for public comments. The Strategy proposes four objectives: 1. Leverage biodiversity to enhance the ecotourism industry in sea and conservation lands. 2. Promote the use of game from wildlife systems to spur transformation and conservation-compatible land use. 3. Encourage consumptive use of marine and freshwater resources to foster socio-economic development. 4. Structure the bioprospecting, biotrade, and biodiversity-based production sector to benefit communities. AWEI submitted suggestions to bolster this strategy and ensure the focus is on conserving biodiversity while ensuring benefits for all South Africans from the sustainable use of wild species and their natural habitats. In comments and recommendations we filed today on a FAO consultation on Agrifood Systems in National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans Draft Guidance for Target 10 of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, SfL endorsed embedding biodiversity into sustainability of agriculture and forestry. The adoption of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF) at the Fifteenth Conference of the Parties (COP15) to the Convention on Biological Diversity marked a significant commitment by 196 countries to a shared vision of a world living in harmony with nature. The KMGBF outlines four ambitious goals for 2050 and 23 specific targets for 2030. As FAO notes, agrifood systems are directly or indirectly linked to all the targets of the KMGBF and farmers, forest managers, land and water resource managers others will play a key role in its achievement.  https://lnkd.in/d5-7BPgJ https://www.cbd.int/gbf https://lnkd.in/d-dCT2iB

Hosted in collaboration with the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE), South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI), and Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT) on 2 December, the forum focused on strengthening business engagement in biodiversity conservation.
