The significant number of offshore structures in federal waters of the GOM that are either due or overdue, for decommissioning is both staggering in number and financial costs, which is why US offshore regulators are focusing on more effective ways to solve these financial problems. However, some of this infrastructure which is at the end of its oil and gas production may be suitable for repurposing for energy transition projects involving the generation of Green H2 or for subsurface CO2 injection and monitoring. Decommissioning offshore infrastructure is a growing challenge for the oil & gas industry, with global costs estimated at over $300 billion. Key players like the US Gulf of Mexico face significant liabilities, raising concerns about who will ultimately bear the financial burden. New regulations aim to protect taxpayers by holding companies accountable for decommissioning costs, but industry pushback suggests this could impact future investments. Looking forward to talking all things decom at Offshore Energies UK #DecomConf24 - for me it’s all about materials (waste) management and the circular economy so come along to stand #28 to find out more about what we do in this space for both oil and gas and offshore wind. Also here is my colleague Phil Smith who’s excited to share what we do in the technical safety and risk management space. #sustainablewastemanagement #circulareconomy #decommissioning #oilandgas #offshorewind #technicalsafety #riskmanagement

“a vast network of ageing, dangerous and rusting oil and gas rigs/pipelines” with a clean up cost of $60 Billion and rising. I wonder how much of this cost taxpayers will end up having to foot compared to the oil/gas giants that profited from these & are legally required to pay?

The government's decision to reverse the ban on offshore oil and gas is justified on the basis of energy security, but MBIE's own modelling suggests that even if anything is found it won't reach market until at least 2035. By this time Methanex will have certainly exited the market, and we'll have more than enough gas to know what to do with. Further, the regulatory impact statement notes that reversing the ban alone is probably insufficient to attract investment, so the government has decided to shift the costs of decommissioning onto the taxpayer. There are plenty of things that could be done to improve energy security (some are laid out in the attached submission). Offshore drilling for climate-destroying fuels isn't one of them. This legislation should be ditched.

7moLooking forward to giving the ROICE Project presentation at OTC on Wednesday afternoon. Couldn't ask for better timing to discuss repurposing the hundreds of structures in the GOM that are near the end of their hydrocarbon production and may be perfiect candidates for cost effective repurposing for Green H2 production or CO2 injection, storage and monitoring. This afternoon at OTC included a great presentation by Erik Oswald, VP of Policy Development at ExxonMobil Low Carbon Solutions. Erik provided an informative and impactful overview of the benefits, operations and challenges of onshore CO2 transport, injection and storage following XOM's acquisition of Denbury. Best of luck to Erik and Rob Tracy in managing that impressive operation.
