King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals - KFUPM has achieved a remarkable milestone by ranking as the top university in the Middle East and North Africa for 2024, according to the Times Higher Education World University Rankings. This accomplishment places KFUPM ahead of all other universities in Saudi Arabia and the wider Gulf region, showcasing its rapid ascent in global academia. In just four years, KFUPM has climbed over 330 spots, moving from 507th globally in 2020 to securing 176th place in 2024. The university's transformation is part of a strategic initiative launched in 2020, and its progress is reflected in other global rankings as well. In the QS World University Rankings, KFUPM rose from 200th in 2020 to 101st in 2024. At the World Bank’s 1995 roundtable on artisanal mining, the number of artisanal miners was estimated at 6 million based on a sample of 16 major producers worldwide, compared to over 44 million today, and an ASM-dependent population estimated at 30 million in 1995 compared to circa 150 million today. ASM workers represented 20% of the global mining sector compared to 90% today.
