Australia’s Labor-led federal government has unveiled a new incentive for renewable hydrogen to attract early investment in the country’s hydrogen development. The tax incentive of A$2 (US$1.33) per kilogram of renewable hydrogen is seen as a direct response to the US Inflation Reduction Act, which some in the industry say poses a threat to Australia’s hydrogen development. New report by the European Court of Auditors finds it unlikely that the EU can achieve its green hydrogen targets for 2030. In what the Court calls a "reality check", it finds that available information from the member states and industry do not support the EU level targets of 10Mt domestic and 10Mt imported renewable hydrogen. It also posits that the Commission's impact assessments were insufficient. The Court now recommends that the Commission update the EU hydrogen targets taking into account 'regional and industrial sector specificities and the role of low-carbon hydrogen' by the end of 2025. Good to see the architect of Australia's hydrogen strategy in 2019 has finally publically admitted that #hydrogen is too expensive and inefficient and therefore should only have selective uses as I said in a previous post and here he has reinforced much of IEEFA Asia Pacific view on hydrogen. *Here Finkel says: “The main role for green hydrogen production in Australia will be as a chemical to produce decarbonised products for export, such as green #iron, green #alumina, green #ammonia, green #fertiliser, green jet fuels and renewable #diesel,” said. Although still remain to be convinced on the latter two. *Perhaps we can now get on with pursing the lowest cost of energy sources - #solar and #wind with #batteries back-up for a more sustainable energy system, and get over the all encompassing hydrogen strategy distraction. https://lnkd.in/gVtVBy9X

I wrote this after three years with customer-focused and Mitsui & Co., Ltd. supported hydrogen startup, Hiringa Energy, where we advocated for policies like the HPTI discussed. It is the right structure. But at the Connecting Green Hydrogen APAC 2024 conference last week #CGHA2024 it was very clear to me that key stakeholders - the north Asian economies, and large energy sector participants with a gas and CCS capability - are not really being heard by Australian projects and policymakers about their preference for cost and emissions tradeoffs and technology neutrality in low-carbon #hydrogen.

Australia's Energy Minister Warns of Risks to #Hydrogen Industry if Subsidies Are Scrapped. Energy Minister Chris Bowen highlighted the critical importance of ongoing government support for the nation's flourishing green hydrogen industry, warning that opposition plans to abolish the Hydrogen Headstart and production incentives could hurt investment and chill interest in the sector. Bowen emphasized that the hydrogen hubs would cease to exist without these programs, jeopardizing Australia's clean energy targets. He also highlighted the government's commitment to constructing a green hydrogen industry that includes First Nations communities. Bowen urged collaborative efforts to strengthen Australia's position as a major trading partner in the global transition to a net-zero future. https://fcw.sh/5mRZTP #greenhydrogen #renewableenergy #hydrogeneconomy #cleanenergy #sustainability #climatechange #energytransition #firstnations #indigenousengagement #APACHydrogenSummit #CleanEnergyFuture #HydrogenEconomy #HydrogenNow #H2

The critical element in the article is, in my mind, "With short distances for more sustainable energy". I understand the theoretical logic behind the request but, considering the offshore renewable developments happening all around (around is the right word I think...) Europe, I do not see how the developments planning could fit the requirements. Let's consider the renewable projects being developed in Southern Europe for example; I do not believe that the business model for such projects is to have the electricity to be entirely sold locally; at the same time there are no clear guidelines on how to sell the energy produced in Sicily (for example) outside the Italian territory. Without such arrangements, e.g. the ability to produce energy where is most technically feasible and to transport it where is needed, how can we build a renewable and green energy network? #renewableenergy #windpower #energytransmission #agreements #powernetwork

We were thrilled to support the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero today with the announcement that Government has reached commercial agreement and confirmed record funding to launch the UK’s first carbon capture industry. Our CEO Celia Greaves, said: “This is a vital step forward, catapulting hydrogen towards long-term certainty we need in the UK. “Supporting hydrogen at scale in two of the biggest UK industrial clusters is the government giving hydrogen another green light as a key component of its green energy ambitions. “We particularly welcome the news that this will provide thousands of new jobs given the HEA’s solid focus on hydrogen’s role in delivering clean growth. “Our own project map has built up a blueprint of hydrogen endeavours across all parts of the UK and this significant investment in carbon capture clusters is going to bring forward the first large scale projects we have seen in the country. “What’s more, it will inject further enthusiasm for wider investment to power-up business confidence which will have a knock-on effect of continuing to position the UK as a global player in hydrogen technology and innovation.” Click on the link to read the release - https://lnkd.in/eYRc3hGy #NetZero #Hydrogen #HydrogenInnovation #CarbonCapture #GreenEnergy #HydrogenTechnology East Coast Cluster HyNet

Australia and Germany have signed a deal to deepen cooperation on an green hydrogen supply chain through a $660 million H2Global funding window to guarantee European buyers for Australia’s hydrogen. The two countries agreed to elevate their existing Energy Partnership to an Energy and Climate Partnership, advancing joint work in climate action and cooperation, energy efficiency, the net zero transition and energy security, along with expanded cooperation on renewable hydrogen trade. It was signed by Australian Minister for Climate and Energy Chris Bowen MP and German State Secretary for Economic Affairs and Climate Action Anja Hajduk in Brisbane today (pictured).
