Have you ever wondered about the best way to assess the risk and potential rewards when deciding whether to attempt repairing a #bitcoin ASIC miner? First step is to divide the repairs into tiers of severability. These are the three tiers identified by the repair experts at Orion & Taurus, LLC, each presenting unique challenges and considerations. ➡ Tier 1 repairs such as those related to Foreign Object Debris (FOD) or software issues, typically have minimal impact on hashboards and can be resolved without heating the PCB. These issues, including organic material build-up causing shorting, can often be remedied through proper PCB cleaning. ➡ Tier 2 repairs are those in which operators encounter repairs involving the replacement of surface-mounted components like resistors, capacitors, or temperature sensors which fall under the repair actions of PCB repair/rework. These repairs are generally reliable if proper ESD mitigating procedures are followed, but they do carry inherent risks due to the need for heat during the repair process. This category may also include minor trace repairs with small breakage points, further adding to the complexity. ➡Tier 3 repairs also fall under the repair/rework category and represent the most significant challenges, often requiring major reconstruction efforts such as replacing corroded pads or even replacing one or multiple individual ASICs, which are bottom-terminated components. These operations can be labor-intensive and pose risks of damaging surrounding parts on the board due to the highly elevated temperatures involved. Want to learn how to determine cost-effectiveness or repairs, how to decide whether to replace or repair and how to deal with catastrophic events? Bitcoin ASIC manufacturer BITMAIN has expanded its Antminer S21 product line with the introduction of new models, the S21+. The company revealed the air-cooled Antminer S21+ and S21+ Hydro at the Bitcoin Amsterdam Conference. The hydro-cooled version delivers a hashrate of 319 TH/s with 15 J/TH efficiency, while the air-cooled S21+ offers 216 TH/s at 16.5 J/TH. Bitmain expects to begin shipping the S21+ Antminers between Q1 and Q2 of 2025. The S21+ models are less efficient than the S21 XP but outperform the original S21 in energy efficiency. Bitmain first announced the S21 product line in October 2023, starting with the S21 and S21 Hydro models, later expanding it with the S21 Pro and S21 XP. Our overall uptime across all sites was 94.20% last week. For this week's Facility Update, please review the following ⬇️ ⛏️⚡️Minnesota 1: The facility has had a few power curtailments to meet energy grid demands, resulting in a brief decline in uptime and utilization. The onsite team is diligently working to minimize the backlog of miners that require attention, ensuring that hashrate returns to full capacity as quickly as possible. ⛏️⚡️Ontario 1: The facility has completed its seasonal maintenance, resulting in a temporary decrease in utilization and uptime. This 24-hour seasonal maintenance outage is essential for ensuring optimal performance and reliability moving forward. Our onsite team will continue to perform diagnostics on any miners experiencing issues to resolve them promptly. ⛏️⚡️Texas 1: We are making steady progress with our systematic relocation from Texas 1. As we approach our contract end date on December 31st, only 1,600 units will remain at the facility. These will be moved as part of the final batch, which will leave the site at the end of the month. ⛏️⚡️Texas 5: The facility has been experiencing a high amount of PDU failures. As a countermeasure, the on-site has been focused on replacing the old PDUs with newer models as soon as they go down. We expect performance to improve further once these swaps are completed.
