Slurry (farm yard manure) is on the move in Ireland right now with the weather so bad and tanks in farm sheds overflowing. but this is less fertiliser needed to be imported from Russia. personally, I'm benefiting from the extra slurry as organic farmers can use slurry from conventional farms. Are new gas pipelines a good thing or will they end up as stranded assets? who will pay the bill if they end up as white elephants? Green gas? is it not better used for planes if any is ever maid a volume? will a green gas power station help stimulate green gas or is it better to leave slurry for growing food and reduce fertiliser use which is just gas in a bag? open debate in my view will be the best way to get the future assets as close to right as could be expected. We all will end up funding these assets one way or another as I was shocked to hear my subcontractor saying in Sweden one day as her refused to my my life easy and take an extra cost on a lazy design on my side. Ireland could do with more of this attitude. "we will all end up funding it"
Together with Gas Networks Ireland, today we announce a landmark development of gas infrastructure, connecting Bord na Móna’s Edenderry Renewable Energy Complex to the national gas network. The grid connection will enable the integration of both natural gas and renewable gas including biomethane and green hydrogen, into the fuel mix at the Co. Offaly renewable energy complex. On completion, the transmission connection project will immediately facilitate a reduction of approximately 40% in CO2 emissions, through the conversion of existing diesel generation assets to natural gas, supporting the national energy grid in times of high demand. This investment will see the construction of a steel transmission pipeline, approximately 22Km in length, that will connect Bord na Móna’s renewable energy complex in Edenderry, to Ireland's €2.8bn gas network. Furthermore, this connection will enable the effective transition to renewable gases in the future, complementing both companies’ renewable strategies. #investment #development #decarbonise #gas #infrastructue #energy #demand

#RenewableEnergy | How is Brazil taking advantage of wind and solar energy? 🇧🇷 The NovaTech Climate Team thinks this is pretty awesome. Over the past two years, Brazil has added an impressive 18.5 GW of clean energy to its grid, thanks to significant contributions from onshore wind and solar PV sectors. This expansion has boosted Brazil’s overall generating capacity to nearly 204 GW, with renewable sources accounting for 171.8 GW. Key states like Bahia, Rio Grande do Norte, and Minas Gerais have led the charge, each incorporating over 3 GW of new capacity. This growth is a testament to Brazil’s long-standing energy diversification policies and strategic investments in renewable energy. Plans have been unveiled for what would be – by some distance – the biggest wind project on Australia’s main grid, a five gigawatt (GW) proposal for north Queensland. The Bogunda wind farm has been unveiled by Australian developer Renewable Energy Partners (REP) and would be located in a region south-east of Hughenden, and would connect to the proposed new Copperstring transmission line that will link the coastal areas with the mineral-rich regions out towards Mount Isa. The project is very much in its early stages, but REP hopes to get a first 2 GW stage up and running by the end of the decade, at a cost of around $5 billion – although the timing will be dependent on progress with the Copperstring power line. #RenewableEnergy #CleanEnergy #Sustainability #GreenEnergy #SolarPower #WindEnergy #ClimateAction #EnergyEfficiency #Renewables #GreenTech

In an exciting development for Brazil's renewable energy sector, grid connection queues are creating new opportunities for energy storage and hybrid systems. Leading companies like Auren, Statkraft, and Casa dos Ventos are adding solar and batteries to their utility-scale wind power sites to optimize existing power transmission capacity. Key Highlights: 🔹 Innovative Solutions: Businesses are integrating batteries into small-scale, distributed generation to tackle connection shortages and power failures, particularly in São Paulo. 🔹 Zero-Grid Approach: France’s GreenYellow is pioneering a “zero-grid” model, focusing on on-site generation without grid injection, having already added over 200 MW of remote-generation solar capacity. 🔹 New Projects: Casa dos Ventos will start building 300 MW of solar in Bahia in 2024, enhancing their existing wind sites with hybrid capabilities. The solar plants will share transmission connections with turbines, operating under the “autoprodução” (self-production) model, offering tax discounts and stable energy prices. https://lnkd.in/dedj2r3J #RenewableEnergy #SolarPower #EnergyStorage

Batteries are hyped as the "solution" to intermittent sources of energy, solar and wind, to overcome technological challenges and provide "baseload" power. 1. Batteries are competitors, not complementary to solar and wind. It has led to electricity arbitrage, buying low and selling high. Batteries are charged when energy is cheapest, and sells power when energy is is demand, when prices are higher. 2. Solar advocates have thought batteries/storage would solve the intermittency problem, less reliability of electricity generation by solar, but this is not the reality. 3. This has proven solar and wind are not central to the grid. What is central to the grid is consistent, baseload power, from nuclear, hydro, and coal power plants. 4. California has added 12 GW of grid batter storage in the last two years, 25% of peak power demand, hoping to overcome intermittency problems, meaning inconsistent electricity generation by solar and wind. 5. Advocates of solar in CA expected a reduction in curtailment, when a grid operator asks an electricity producer not to produce power, usually to avoid overloading the grid. But in CA, curtailments rose 62%, in spite of massive battery storage additions, in spite of solar and wind contributing the same 26% of electricity generation in CA since 2021. 6. Conclusion. Batteries finance themselves through energy arbitrage. The real beneficiary of intermittent solar and wind are natural gas turbines, which backup solar and wind. A more economic solution of clean energy would be electricity generation from nuclear, hydro, and geothermal, with less reliance on solar and wind, intermittent sources of electricity generation. I summarized Oscar Martin’s post about batteries. Here is the original post. https://loom.ly/99IJ8xw
