An alternative method would be #venting, which however releases the dangerous, toxic gases into the air.  #Flaring is in fact the best practice to eliminate these by-products, despite it being still immensely wasteful and polluting. Not all the gas is flared.  As times have developed and there are an increasing number of uses for gas, it can be economically captured in the more modern oil rigs.
