Raise your hand if you've ever seen one of these installed with the shipping plugs never removed. (Me!) Thanks European Process Safety Centre for the Lesson, download it here https://lnkd.in/gfFmyCcp #processSafety #pressuresafety #safety
uncertainty often exists whether shipping nut provided in the bonnet on Balanced Bellow PSVS should be left in place or removed. as indicated in the bulletin above, shipping nuts should be removed so that the bonnet vent path remains open and back pressure is prevented in case of internal leakage past the bellow. However, the vent needs to be routed to safe location.

1moI remember seeing a Process Safety Beacon by the Center of Chemical Process Safety showing the photo of balanced bellows PSV with a plugged vent on its body while there was a tag closed to the valve installation indicating that the vent port must be directed to a safe location. I believe that these days, manufacturers install a warning tag on the body of balanced bellow PSVs so that plug to be removed when they are installed. I also remember a former colleague of mine, who was a very good inspector, notified Engineering of a BB PSV with a plugged vent. He identified the PSV as BB based on its model number as the conventional and BB PSVs look the same. It turned out the PSV Datasheet incorrectly had shown it as conventional which resulted in the plug not being removed when the PSV was installed in the field. A non-conformance was issued to ensure that improved the receiving and releasing steps for PSVs and the non-conformance was resolved when issue with the particular PSV was resolved.
