The EPSRC today announced £22 million investment for seven projects to kick start economic growth and address regional needs. The projects are led by consortia of universities, civic bodies, businesses and local authorities. Each consortium focuses on a scientific theme in engineering and physical sciences research and targets a specific geographical area to support the expansion or development of a research and innovation cluster. The Nuclear robotics and artificial intelligence cluster across Cumbria and Oxfordshire is being led by Dr Kirsty Hewitson at the UK Atomic Energy Authority, with University and civic partners including the University of Oxford. Professor Nick Hawes, Director of the Oxford Robotics Institute, who will lead Oxford’s involvement, says: “We’ve already seen the huge impact that robotics and Artificial Intelligence (AI) can have on problems in nuclear decommission. This new place-based impact accelerator will allow the Oxford Robotics Institute to continue to help shape that impact by supporting the robotics and AI community in bringing their innovations to bear on problems in the nuclear industry.” https://lnkd.in/d7cJ6wCu

📣 Call for proposals! Today we’re launching the first funding call for our new programme ‘Safeguarded AI’, led by Programme Director David ‘davidad’ Dalrymple. As AI becomes more capable, it has the potential to power scientific breakthroughs, enhance global prosperity, and safeguard humanity from disasters. But only if it’s deployed wisely. By combining scientific world models and mathematical proofs, we will aim to develop quantitative safety guarantees for AI like we see in industries like aviation or nuclear power. Proving that safety assurances *are* possible will materially change what’s possible for AI advancement, and our ability to safely reap the benefits of this transformative technology. ARIA will direct £59 million over four years to meet the objectives of this programme. This will be split into three ‘technical areas’ (TAs), each with a specific aim, approach, and budget. Our first call is for researchers who can help us develop formal languages that both people and AI can use to precisely specify, verify, and control the behaviour of AI systems against formal requirements in uncertain environments. More funding opportunities will be available soon. Find out more about the programme and how to apply here: https://lnkd.in/eD-fBaqP

AI and Digital Twins are gaining significant attention across various industries due to their increasing technological maturity, which has led to clearer investment-benefit trade-offs. At the #HADRON Laboratory/Centre of Institute for Energy Technology, we specialize in designing, testing, and deploying innovative solutions for facility and site lifecycle management, including commissioning and decommissioning. Our focus is on safety-critical situations, such as nuclear applications, where managing risks and hazards is paramount. We integrate AI and Digital Twins with sophisticated physics models for impact assessment and employ advanced remote techniques (robots) for data gathering. This combination forms the core of our HADRON Lab's mission: a holistic approach to applying AI, data, robotics, and physics-powered Digital Twins to enable safer and more efficient operations. If you're attending the Nordic Nuclear Forum next week, visit us at booth #36. As part of a non-profit organization, we help companies achieve a competitive edge through innovation with AI and Digital Twins. We’d love to discuss how our solutions can benefit you or explore opportunities for collaboration in AI, data, and robotics. We are also keen to share how we support nuclear safety in some of the most challenging environments, including the Chernobyl site. If you can’t meet us next week, join us at our Halden facility for #DigiDECOM 2024, from November 12-15, where the DigiDECOM Community will gather to discuss the future of AI, data, and robotics-powered innovation at nuclear and other safety-critical sites. https://lnkd.in/dBpuwfN8 Jan Otto Porsmyr Réka Szőke Edvin Edvardsen Kjell Tore Hansen #nuclaer #safety #AI #robotics #DigitalTwins #decommissionning #innovation

🚨New from me and Matt Hourihan today in Real Clear Defense. In the face of rapidly advancing global technological competition, the significance of AI cannot be overstated. As we navigate this era of profound transformation, it is essential to recognize and utilize every asset at our disposal to maintain a competitive edge over foreign adversaries like the PRC. Central to this endeavor is the Department of Energy’s (DOE) national laboratory system. The capabilities and potential of these labs are immense, encompassing cutting-edge research in AI, quantum computing, robotics, and nuclear energy. However, to fully leverage these capabilities and ensure the United States remains a global leader in innovation and security, decisive action and leadership from Congress is imperative. The strategic advantage provided by investing in our national labs extends beyond maintaining technological leadership—it is a bulwark against the multifaceted threats posed by the technological ascendancy of the PRC. https://lnkd.in/g-EcKrww

CRA Forum 2024 - Speaker Announcement. CRA is delighted to announce that Rav Chunilal from Sellafield Ltd will be speaking at the forum. Rav is the Head of Robotics & Artificial Intelligence at Sellafield Ltd, the UK’s largest nuclear site. He is responsible for developing and deploying Robotics and AI technologies in support of decommissioning the site safely, efficiently, and cost-effectively. His appointment supports Sellafield Ltd and the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority’s (NDA) focus on investing in robotics, autonomous systems and artificial intelligence as a key part of accelerating the safe delivery of the nuclear decommissioning mission. Rav has united different teams to work together across Sellafield and other nuclear sites around the UK. The collaborations have also extended to other government organisations and academia to share knowledge more effectively. Sellafield Ltd and the NDA have expanding their mission to share knowledge in the form of quarterly forums bringing together operators from across the industry and supply chain. The advancements in research and development made by Sellafield Ltd and NDA's robotics capability is supporting the work on site in clearing nuclear waste, inspecting buildings and equipment, and sorting and segregating wastes. These efforts have made Sellafield a front-runner in the nuclear industry for applying robotics and AI technologies. At the CRA Risk & Safety Forum 2024, Rav will be speaking on the topic: "The Role of Emerging Technologies for safe operations". New technologies play a crucial role in enhancing the efficiency of Sellafield Ltd's workforce. Robotics and artificial intelligence (AI) are instrumental in assisting employees with their daily tasks. To successfully integrate these innovations, it is essential to build and demonstrate confidence in their capabilities, ensuring they are perceived as positive advancements that will ultimately create new skills and opportunities. Has any new nuclear company figured out product market fit? Too many startups claim their reactor can do anything you ask: 💡 Power Production ⛴️ Marine Propulsion 🚀 Space Propulsion 🔥 Process Heat ⚛️ Hydrogen Production 💧 Desalination 🏥 Medical Isotope Production ...and the list could go on. Sure, your reactor 𝙘𝙖𝙣 do anything of those things, but what is it 𝙙𝙚𝙨𝙞𝙜𝙣𝙚𝙙 to do? I've seen too many of these startups try and find a market for their product rather than trying to build a product for their market. I seem to recall learning not to do that in the first week at business school. Until that changes, I worry that most of these nuclear startups are doomed to fail. (Also, this AI image was too ridiculous not to use) #nuclearpower #atomiceconomics #atomecon
