Q&A for Deep Foundation (2) I've enjoyed technical Q&A conversations with students during my online course. Here are the examples for your reference. https://lnkd.in/g7sWrhv Q4) What's the difference between Qs friction and Qs adhesion? What sum up the two Qs? A4) Qs friction calculates the drained soil parameter and Qs adhesion calculates the undrained soil parameter. In the pile analysis, these two Qs need be calculated alternatively depending on the soil type of each layer. Q sum is added up of Qs friction and Qs adhesion Q5)Neutral plan calculation spreadsheet is not found in the spreadsheet that you shared, can we I have one? And you shared two means to determine the neutral plan, one is from the formula of Bra ja das, another one is by looking at the actual displacement from the result of Settlement analysis under embankment, which of the two is more accurate? Why in the spreadsheet analysis the neutral plan was assumed equal to the length (L) of the pile for End bearing pile when neutral plan can be determined from any other means. A5)Das's formula in lecture slide presents distributional load solution below sloped embankment. Actual settlements at center/side slope/outside of embankment can be calculated with provided spreadsheets. If you have Bowles's foundation book, you can find a neutral plan location formula although it always produces around 2/3 point of pile depth. It is your task to figure out why I set neutral plan at end of pile tip. Q6) Pile 1 in Ex.6 would experience sum of downdrag before and after road embankment extension in this case? What to do if the factored structural capacity is less than the factored downdrag? There is a need to use pile having bigger structural capacity in the case Downdrag is bigger than the structural capacity right? A6) If your estimated factored downdrag load is greater than ultimate structural capacity of pile, you may reconsider the larger sized piles or wait the pile installation until 60 to 90% settlement due to a new embankment fill load. #practical #EPC #solution #deep #foundation #design #LRFD

𝐒𝐢𝐦𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐓𝐢𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐂𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐑𝐞𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐖𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐬 𝐔𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐱𝐢𝐬 𝟐𝐃 Tiered cantilever retaining walls are commonly used to stabilize sloped terrains by creating multiple levels of soil support. These structures face challenges like earth pressure distribution, soil-structure interaction, and stability under various loading conditions. Such problems can be effectively analyzed using Plaxis 2D, which provides detailed insights into the behavior of soil and retaining walls, enabling engineers to design safer and more efficient solutions. #GeotechnicalEngineering #Plaxis2D #RetainingWalls #SoilStructureInteraction #CivilEngineering #SlopeStability #NumericalModeling #StructuralDesign #EngineeringInnovation
