Thought I'd share a snippet of my jump flying gig. It's a pilot job like any other, with the usual paperwork, the usual prep., preflight, fuel management, W&B, checklists, ATC, technical issues, emergencies ....etc. But I will be forever thankful to the hiring manager for giving me this opportunity because of a few unique elements that it exposes a pilot to. First and foremost, outside of certain military or CD operations, this gig is one of few where you open your door at 10,000+ft., you've got a cut-away knife on the ready for any snags, you're wearing a parachute and know how to use it, you're listening and talking on two or three frequencies simultaneously with a local center, CTAF, nearby CTAF, as well as other pilots in the area. You're worried about traffic not only near you, but thousands of ft above, below, and for many miles around. You have to tailor and calculate your flight path to factor in winds aloft at jump altitude, chute opening altitude, and surface winds. Open the door at under 70KIAS. Safely deploy the jumpers at just above stall speeds, then manage to close the door at (hard left rudder), followed by a power off dive at ~3000.ft/m, which gets you back on the ground in under 5 mins to start working on your next load. Most landings are 'dead stick' (traffic permitting) no flap landings given the empty W&B with no seats in the aircraft other than the pilot's. The climb-out takes 10-15mins. Video starts at 10k' a few seconds before the door opens. I sped up a few mins of the descent to avoid boring you to death. Notice any mistakes.... don't judge :) we all make them. Fly safe out there!

Air Races, Rallies and Competitions: A great way to brush up on your flying skills is to enter one of the #SAPFA events (sapfa.co.za) Some of the lessons I have taken away from these events: 1. Navigating without GPS is tough! Limited to maps and compasses, these races put pilots and navigators to the test. 2. It's a team sport! Because GPS is not allowed, the pilot relies heavily on his/her navigator to keep the team on track. 3. Become a Springbok! You might not have the power of Bongi or the feistiness of Faf, but you can still become a Springbok by participating in and competing in the season events. 4. It sharpens your skills! Navigation, Flight planning, CRM operating multi-crew, Situational awareness, Operating under pressure, and much more. This is, at its heart, a great learning experience.
