Thank you for participating in The Pivot Fund's Latino community news focus group, Mauricio Montes de Oca, and thank you for helping organize Viviana Salazar. It was a great session, and we learned a lot from the community in North Minneapolis. The lessons will be part of a Pivot Fund report that examines the Minnesota local news landscape and identifies emerging and existing news sources for underserved audiences. The report will be delivered in mid-July and look at: ✅ What's happening at the macro level? ✅ How is current local news coverage resonating with audiences, especially communities of color? ✅ Who is connecting with audiences? The report will analyze the challenges and solutions for local news in Minnesota and provide recommendations to meet the information needs of diverse communities and strengthen the local news ecosystem. This Minnesota research follows a Georgia news landscape report The Pivot Fund produced. The Georgia report led to seven Georgia news outlets led by people of color getting $2 million in funding from The Pivot Fund. Our goal with our Minnesota research is to put grassroots news sources on philanthropy's radar and help strengthen local news for communities of color in Minnesota, including the Latino community. Today is a great day for local news. Press Forward, a national movement to strengthen democracy by revitalizing local news, announced they are awarding $20 million to 250 news outlets, including one in every state and 24 current Report for America partner newsrooms. “These newsrooms are proof that we are seeing a moment of transformation, where new and longstanding are stepping up to create a new story for local news,” said Dale R. Anglin, Director, Press Forward. “Each newsroom plays a vital public service role in its community – providing trustworthy local news and information in places where no other sources may exist. Independent newsrooms need community support to survive. Community foundations hold a special place in my heart. In smaller, rural communities like mine (Eureka, CA), large foundations or major donors aren’t always available to support mission-driven initiatives. This is where #CommunityFoundations step in to shine. But they also carry the heavy responsibility of: 🌟 Painting a hopeful vision for their community while 🔍 Honestly addressing the unique challenges that need solving. When you add in diverse political perspectives and the need to take a stand at times, these goals can feel even harder to achieve. At Friday, we’ve found that dedicating time for strategic thinking around #branding and #communications is crucial—not just for the success of the foundations themselves, but for the programs and initiatives they deploy. Here are a few insights we’ve gathered from working with community foundations: 1. Create a unifying vision—Storytelling around the future you want to build helps to inspire hope. It’s hard to argue against a brighter tomorrow! 2. Lean on data—Presenting the status quo through data feels less biased and more grounded. “Here’s our vision for the future, and here’s where we are today. Help us bridge the gap.” This balance of visionary storytelling and data-driven realism fosters hope while igniting a sense of urgency to act. 💬 What do you think? Do you agree that building trust within a community is like planting seeds ❓ With care and time, it grows into a strong and unified network of support. Together with the 2024 Democracy Fellows, we focused on our community. One of the key questions we explored was: What factors help build a strong community❓ 🌱 As with planting seeds, the environmental conditions must be optimal. That is why, when we focus on building communities at Humanity in Action, we prefer face-to-face contact — human to human. 🎈 Unfortunately, meeting in person is only possible on some occasions. That is why it is essential to offer ourselves time together, even if it is online. Getting to know each other is the first and necessary step to build trust. That is why we devoted our time last Sunday to community members who shared their personal stories, explaining who they are and what factors shaped them as human beings. Like some quickly growing plants, a community needs support. In our case, we developed a system in which: 🔺 We meet regularly once a month as a group and inspire each other in the subject matter (Democracy and the Politics of Memory). 🔺 Our Fellows work closely with another person (a buddy). 🔺 Our Fellows meet more frequently with a small group of people (a pod) to discuss ongoing successes and challenges in project implementation. Beyond focusing on our community, we also discuss ways to share human rights and social justice issues that we deeply care about with people outside our echo chambers. How do we make it interesting to them so that they become our allies? Again, we offer some support: 🔺 Opportunities to work with creative social media experts. 🔺 Additional financial resources (Impact Fund) for outstanding project ideas to increase outreach.
