As we've seen, this is a global phenomenon, with countries like the United States and China at the forefront, but many others joining the race. The implications of long-term autonomous systems in space, imbued with a multi-spectral view of Earth, and self-contained decision making are far-reaching. They necessarily connect with issues of national security, international cooperation, and the very nature of warfare itself. The Role of the Space Domain in the Armed Conflicts Since the onset of the conflict in February 2022, the military engagement between Russia and Ukraine has evolved into a protracted battle, resulting in significant casualties and destruction for both nations.  The conflict has accelerated technological advancements, particularly in the realms of artificial intelligence (AI) and drone technology, as each side seeks to gain a strategic and tactical edge. The role of space technology has become increasingly pivotal, providing critical support for communication, navigation, and real-time documentation of the conflict. Space operations have not only enhanced sides’ capabilities, but also highlighted the broader strategic significance of space in modern warfare. This domain is now a key arena for both state and non-state actors, including private companies and NGOs, influencing the dynamics and outcomes of conflicts. Furthermore, the integration of space technology with AI represents a trend toward digitalizing command and control systems across multiple domains, a shift that predates the conflict but has been propelled by it. It is important to admit that the reliance on space-based systems introduces new vulnerabilities, with potential risks of disruption or coercion extending into space or across national borders, potentially impacting global security. Small satellites and artificial intelligence (AI) are at the forefront of this transformation, not as tools for tomorrow, but as critical capabilities we need today. These technologies are becoming increasingly intertwined, offering the potential to create a more agile, responsive, and data-driven defense infrastructure. However, for smallsats and AI to deliver their full potential, we must proactively reshape how we engage with modern threats and streamline the systems that govern their adoption. I have dedicated my career to focusing on non-traditional acquisition methodologies and avoiding "legacy" DoD program offices like the plague, operating under the assumption that non-traditional acquisition would only grow in scope and funding. So naturally, it's nice to see Congress supporting non-traditional acquisition agencies like DIU and authorizing a nearly 10X increase in YoY funding.

What does space development and advancement look like in the digital age? Although is a broad question, but this piece by Kelle Wendling does a good job of exploring some of the possibilities. My personal favorite tip from Wendling is this: Iterate to innovate. Because we're living in a highly dynamic contested environment, we have to really lean into new technologies like AI, ML, digital engineering and rapid prototyping. "The good news is that the democratization of technology over the past decade gives us a tremendous opportunity to move away from costly, bespoke solutions in favor of more modular, cloud-based systems that can be rapidly upgraded as new threats emerge," writes Wendling. I think this is a great point; although many aspects of the aerospace and defense industry are more complicated than ever, we are in an era where technology and innovation are more accessible than ever before. #Aerospace #DefenseIndustry #DigitalInnovation
