I get to hear this myth very often: ❌Myth: Sustainable tourism is ONLY about protecting the environment ✅Fact: Needless to say, environmental conservation is a significant aspect of sustainable tourism, however, it’s not the only one that should be prioritised. Sustainable tourism is also about supporting local communities, preserving cultural heritage and ensuring that economic benefits reach the local communities such that they get a fair share of their contributions. Sustainability in tourism is about making conscious choices that prioritise the well-being of all – environment, planet, people and communities. Banishing the myths can help promote a greater and much better understanding of the significance of sustainable tourism. 👉Read the article here: https://lnkd.in/gk_EPrnb #sustainabletourism #sustainability #storytelling #travelwriting #learning #responsibletourism YouInVerse Planeterra Sustainable Tourism India

QUO VADIS Tourism? 🚶♂️ We have spent the past few days at the ITB Berlin in the context of our work linked to sustainable and regenerative tourism. Fairs like the ITB are a stark reminder that sustainable tourism is still far from mainstream around the globe and often misunderstood. Organising hiking trips and promoting local food while trying to increase visitor numbers and even the number of direct flights to the destination is not sustainable, let alone regenerative. Yes, we actually met with a destination that calls this regenerative because of the ‘benefits’ for locals. Greenwashing is rife and the meaning of the words sustainable and regenerative are increasingly weakened as they are highjacked by marketing campaigns. 🛤️ Sustainability is not a destination but a journey, a movement, and there are no short cuts. The proposed GREEN CLAIMS directive would require companies to substantiate the voluntary green claims they make in business-to-consumer commercial practices, by complying with a number of requirements regarding their assessment. The ITB was also an opportunity to meet with other Green Destinations representatives and staff from across the world to discuss new exciting initiatives to strengthen our work. There’s a common misconception that incorporating sustainable tourism practices will lead to a less enjoyable or comfortable experience for guests. In reality, the opposite is true. For example, sustainable tourism often encourages more thoughtful service practices. Whether it’s offering reusable water bottles and refill stations or providing shuttle services to reduce transportation emissions, these initiatives can make guests feel cared for and involved in positive change. 🫶🏻 Through our beSMART Platform, we help tourism businesses integrate sustainability into their operations in ways that enhance guest satisfaction, not hinder it. You don’t have to choose between sustainability and great service—why not have both?
