Enovis Foot & Ankle's VP of Marketing, Shannon Cummings, recently met up with BONEZONE Magazine | OMTEC Expo to speak on the growth and future of total ankle replacements. "We can make specific instrumentation that conforms to the patient’s anatomy and allows surgeons to make a more precise cut,” Cummings said. “That’s great for surgeons because they’re able to be more accurate and operate more efficiently. It’s also great for patients because the longer they’re in the O.R., the more risk is involved. The more we can speed up these procedures, the better.” Read more at: https://bit.ly/3vLRtto

We're at a junction in Orthopaedics where the procedures are so good that it's placing higher and higher demands on the materials and Tribology (interaction between materialls) used to make prostheses: For example I just saw a patient for his 6 week review post hip anterior hip replacement. Me: "How are things going with your new hip" Patient: "Well 2 weeks ago I rode interstate on my motor cycle. Last week I went camping and have one of those pop up tents which turn the roof of the car into a sleeper and I climbed up fine, and on the Easter weekend I went rock climbing!". While it's satisfying to achieve results like this, as a surgeon I do worry that patients are placing extreme demands on an implant that needs time for bone integration. Surgeons now need implant companies to innovate to speed up this process since patients don't want to wait when modern procedures have solved their pain and where recovery is quick. Disclaimer: Results from surgery vary. Always discuss a procedure with your healthcare professional. Craig Loucks, MD Shawn W Palmer Ryan Molli, D.O., F.A.A.H.K.S., F.A.A.O.S.

🦶Foot & ankle surgeons 😷, it’s not about whether you are a traditional open surgeon or employing 100% MIS technique for procedures. The key💡is fitting it into your practice when appropriate or indicated. The benefits of MIS extend well beyond bunions. The truth 👨🏫 is that many surgeries we do can by hybrid, where a percutaneous osteotomy can augment an open soft tissue repair. This approach limits the surgical footprint, decreases scarring (or need for multiple/irregular incisions), decreases pain for patient, & speeds healing/recovery. That’s a win-win 🙌🏆for surgeon & patient! Case in point, I share a recent surgery involving a 43 y/o female 👱♀️with progressive chronic lateral ankle pain (several years) overlying course of peroneal tendons. Failed conservative treatment 🤦♀️. MRI demonstrates tear of peroneus brevis, & WB X-rays 🩻demonstrate heel varus deformity. Percutaneous Dwyer calcaneal osteotomy was performed using advanced nitinol compression screw technology (Enovis Foot & Ankle), along with open peroneal tenosynovectomy & repair. Learn some MIS, put it in your surgical toolbox! 🧰 #mis #footsurgeon #footandankle #footsurgery #foot “It’s burr time!” 🎥 Gundersen Health System Bellin Health

Are we using all our Senses in Hip Replacement? Does the mantra of 'pitch change' hold true, or is it a crude measure in orthopedics? Can acoustic profile influence how we perform total hip replacement? Can it mitigate complications? Prevent complications like fracture and subsidence? Dr. Gordon Dandie shares his experience with the MySpine Cervical guides: "The guides we use are not just navigational tools; they are an extension of our existing surgical approach. This means the learning curve for adopting this innovative technique is remarkably short. " MySpine Cervical is a patient-matched pedicle screw placement guide that allows the surgeon to determine their preoperative 3D planning based on CT images of the patient’s spine. This innovative concept combines several different features to offer potential benefits to both the surgeon and the patient and is set to transform posterior cervical surgeries with precise, personalized care. The end of the countdown has arrived! As we celebrated the remarkable advancements in weight bearing CT and CurveBeam AI throughout 2024, each milestone marks a significant step toward our shared vision for the future, and we’re excited to share this journey with you. Curvebeam AI's top event of the year was when Dr. Canaan Prater, DO, successfully completed the first personalized knee replacement procedure that was planned from weight bearing CT (WBCT) imaging. Dr. Prater, an orthopedic surgeon at OrthoCarolina in Charlotte, NC, submitted a CT dataset acquired from a CurveBeam AI HiRise weight bearing CT system for the restor3d Imprint™ Total Knee Replacement system. restor3d engineers used advanced AI to segment and analyze the WBCT scan to build a personalized surgical plan with patient-specific cutting guides, allowing for improved implant fit and accurate placement during surgery. “The scan itself is less claustrophobic, and a more pleasant process overall for the patient,’ Dr. Prater said.” Because the patient is weight bearing, I feel more confident in the hip knee alignment. This is a tool that enables us to give patients personalized implants that I am hopeful will pay off with long term reliability and higher satisfaction rates." “WBCT has been a game changer in foot & ankle orthopedic medicine, and we look ahead to transformational advances in patient knee care enabled by this technology," said Arun Singh, CurveBeam AI COO, CTO-CT, & President – Americas & Europe. #CountdownTo2025 #WeightBearingCT #OrthopedicImaging #CurveBeamAI #KneeReplacement #restor3D
