Major strides in corporate transparency! Over 3,162 companies, including industry giants like Unilever, Sumitomo Chemical, and Johnson & Johnson, have disclosed their plastic production, use, and disposal data through the Carbon Disclosure Project. ♻️ This marks a significant step towards transparency by major brand owners, focusing on the most problematic plastics for the environment. This data disclosure could become a mandatory requirement in the upcoming Global Plastics Treaty, currently under discussion. The US government has recently unveiled its ambitious plan for combatting the plastics pollution. The plan aims to phase out all single-use plastics across US federal government agencies by 2035 and all single-use plastic products in foodservice, packaging, and events by 2027. This is a great step in the right direction. However, just like the Global Plastics Treaty that's currently being discussed, there is an over-emphasis on recycling and reliance on a potentially unrealistic amount of behavioral change. Words like 'recycling' and 'recyclable' are mentioned 172 times in the document detailing the government's plan, while 'compostable' and 'composting' are mentioned only 11 times. A more powerful strategy should rely on all the tools currently available in our arsenal - petrochemical plastics recycling, improving recycling infrastructure, striving to change the 'single-use mentality', AND developing production capacities for compostable materials such as PHAs, their copolymers and other bioplastics. #plastics #bioplastics #recycling #sustainability #plasticspollution #greeneconomy #circularity #singleuseplastics

The Global Commitment signatories are leading the way showing that it is possible to make progress towards a common vision in which plastic never becomes waste, but our latest report also highlights that the world is off track to eliminate plastic waste and pollution. Through both the barriers faced and successful achievements, #GlobalCommitment24 shows that a legally binding global plastics treaty would have a significant impact for both the signatories and the rest of the plastic packaging sector. The Global Plastics Treaty currently being negotiated is a once in a generation opportunity to transform the plastics economy and further incentivise accelerated business action in concert with policy. Download our latest Global Commitment report to find out more about what progress business has made and some of the key lessons for further business action and policy intervention. https://bit.ly/3B3LYZH #ChancetoChange

🌍 There are now 12 Plastics Pact Network across the globe with over 900 organisations, our efforts have significantly advanced the journey toward a circular economy for plastics. Our collective action has already resulted in the removal of billions of problematic plastics, a 23% boost in the amount of plastic packaging that is recyclable, and a remarkable 44% increase in recycled content. ⚖As we engage in discussions at #INC4, we advocate for a comprehensive, legally binding global treaty that addresses the entire lifecycle of plastics, underscoring the critical role of Plastics Pacts in meeting ambitious environmental goals. 📄 For more details on our achievements and the transformative power of collective action, check out the executive summary of our 'hot off the press' report on the WRAP's website. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/eTtMiUHm #PLASTICSPACTNETWORK #CircularEconomy #Sustainability

As a member of The Business Coalition for a Global Plastics Treaty we, together with 200+ global businesses and financial institutions, are calling for treaty negotiations at #INC4 to: 1️⃣ Prioritize discussions on provisions related to restrictions and phase-outs, reuse policies, product design requirements, extended producer responsibility, and waste management. We believe that these are the critical elements which have the greatest potential to deliver change as soon as possible. 2️⃣ Build on lessons from existing voluntary efforts to shape globally binding rules that can scale available solutions to tackle plastic pollution globally, create transparency, and level the playing field for industry by implementing and enforcing harmonized regulations over the full life-cycle of plastics. 3️⃣ With limited time left for negotiations, we need to agree on a “start-and-strengthen" approach, which focuses initially on the plastic applications and sectors where there is already alignment, such as packaging.
