Enhancing Maritime Security: EU NAVFOR's 15th Industry Strategic Meeting On May 30-31, Madrid hosted the 15th Industry Strategic Meeting, where EU NAVFOR’s Operation ATALANTA convened to address maritime operations in the Northwest Indian Ocean, Gulf of Aden, the Gulf, and the Red Sea, in collaboration with the shipping industry. Vice Admiral Emmanuel Slaars, Operation Commander of European Maritime Awareness Strait of Hormuz, stated, "The balance is changing in the region, due to the impact of relevant crises like Ukraine and Gaza. We are all committed to keeping the sealines open, and it is common sense to think about a single EU Maritime operation able to address all maritime security-related issues in the Indian Ocean, also facilitating coordination with the European shipping industry." Since November 2023, commercial shipping has been under attack by the Houthis in Yemen in the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean, in response to the conflict in Gaza. Additionally, there has been a resurgence of piracy off Somalia. The meeting, co-chaired by EUNAVFOR ASPIDES and the Combined Maritime Forces (CMF) with Operation AGENOR as a special guest, included maritime industry representatives such as the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) and Bimco. They discussed current threats to the sector. The event emphasized the need to streamline communication with a single point of contact for the industry to request assistance and access information. “The discussions and outcomes of this meeting aim to improve operational collaboration and provide practical information to all stakeholders,” EU NAVFOR said in a statement. Vice Admiral Ignacio Villanueva Serrano, Operation Commander of European Naval Force Operation ATALANTA, noted that the various forces are seeking common solutions to enhance security in their respective areas. #MaritimeSecurity #EUOperationATALANTA #ShippingIndustry #NavalForces #SafetyAtSea

Exercise Obangame Express (OE) is one of three African regional “Express” series exercises sponsored by U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) and facilitated by U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa/U.S. Sixth Fleet (NAVEUR-NAVAF-SIXTHFLT). The exercise is designed to train NAVAF/SIXTHFLT forces while advancing AFRICOM Campaign Plan Lines of Effort. The exercise will improve regional cooperation in support of the Yaoundé Code of Conduct, Maritime Domain Awareness (MDA), information sharing between Maritime Operation Centers (MOCs), maritime interdiction, adherence to the rule of law, and counter-proliferation interdiction capabilities in order to disrupt illicit maritime activity and strengthen safety and security in the Gulf of Guinea. The exercise begins with an in-port training period followed by at-sea scenarios. The underway portion of the exercise tests participating MOCs’ and ships’ abilities to coordinate and conduct maritime interdiction operations (MIO) by boarding teams against simulated suspect vessels, detecting illicit activity, and follow-on evidence collection procedures. https://lnkd.in/dg-MVcVs

I wish I didn't have to write this, but the United States Department of Defense has got to get its act together when it comes to preparing for and adapting to severe #weather. As I testified two weeks ago before the Senate Budget Committee, there are innovative startups in the private sector that are fielding transformational capabilities to monitor and predict the #ocean and #atmosphere, as well as AI-enabled decision support tools. Examples include Lynker, Sofar Ocean, ClimateAi, and Tomorrow.io which can give our military the edge they need right now. USS Kirk (DE-1087):The destroyer escort USS Kirk (later redesignated as a frigate, FF-1087) was involved in one of the greatest humanitarian missions in U.S. military history. During the Vietnam War, as North Vietnamese forces entered Saigon, the Kirk participated in Operation Frequent Wind—the evacuation of Saigon. The Kirk handled evacuees from 16 South Vietnamese helicopters, which safely landed aboard the ship. The crew showed compassion for the refugees, including children. The ship’s legacy is bound up in mercy, as it rescued tens of thousands of refugees. General Humanitarian Operations:Although the U.S. Navy is primarily known for its naval combat capabilities, it has a long history of humanitarian operations. These operations include disaster relief (such as responding to hurricanes, earthquakes, etc.), rescues at sea, refugee assistance, emergency medical deployments, and nation-building activities (such as providing food or construction aid). #USSKIRK #USNI #HumanitarianOperations

Forward-deployed Marines have successfully concluded joint military drills in the Philippines, establishing a strong foundation for upcoming exercises with Indonesia and Malaysia. These exercises are designed to enhance interoperability among U.S. forces and regional allies, strengthening collective defense capabilities in the face of evolving security challenges in the Indo-Pacific. The emphasis on joint training is critical for building readiness and resilience, ensuring that partner nations can effectively collaborate in times of crisis. During the recent drills, Marines engaged in a variety of operations, including amphibious landings, urban warfare simulations, and logistical coordination. These practical experiences are essential for preparing troops to face diverse scenarios they may encounter during future operations in Southeast Asia. For instance, the amphibious landings simulate real-world conditions, allowing forces to refine their tactics and improve their response times. Consider this scenario: as geopolitical tensions rise in the Indo-Pacific, the collaborative nature of these drills not only enhances military readiness but also fosters stronger relationships between U.S. forces and Southeast Asian militaries. These partnerships are vital for ensuring stability and security in a rapidly changing geopolitical landscape. By training together, these nations can build trust, improve communication, and develop shared operational procedures, which are crucial for effective joint responses to potential threats. The strategic importance of these exercises cannot be overstated. They serve as a clear signal to both allies and adversaries that the U.S. is committed to maintaining peace and stability in the region. Furthermore, they highlight the U.S. military’s adaptability in addressing the unique challenges posed by the Indo-Pacific environment, such as maritime security and humanitarian assistance operations. A recent defence deal between Somalia and Turkey has great significance for Somalia and the region's security. The agreement, which covers both land and sea, aims to enhance defence cooperation between Turkey and Somalia. It includes the possibility of Turkey providing both training and equipment for a Somali navy. Its near-term impact should, however, not be exaggerated. Instead, it should be understood as a good-faith agreement signed between asymmetric powers whose interests overlap a little, at
