Portugal Calling: Europe's Sneaky Innovation Hub Is Lisbon the next Silicon Valley? Here are a few data points for your consideration: Last week I wrote about the undersea cable being laid by Google (Alphabet) between New York and Portugal, with a stop in the Azores. Growappy raised €600,000 investment from Caixa Geral de Depósitos CGD in their first funding round. The LISBON AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE along with the Unicorn Factory Lisboa (a pretty cool name), launched a €360,000 prize fund for companies that use innovation to improve and modernize the city of Lisbon. GED Ventures Portugal made a €2 million seed investment in sqill which they will use to open an office in Austin, Texas. Though I'm not really plugged into the tech community yet, Lisbon strikes me as a place with lots of entrepreneurs who could move elsewhere to make it easier on themselves but they want to succeed here because Portugal is their home. The government doesn't really know how to support them. There's not nearly enough capital, and too many people have a scarcity mindset. Investment dollars tend to gravitate toward real estate. The economy is dominated by long-established companies, and there is a cultural predisposition to encourage young people to get a "good job" and not take risks. In spite of all this, there is a ton of entrepreneurial energy here. And because of the capital supply dynamic, investors are getting favorable terms and downright reasonable valuations. No, it doesn't look like Lisbon is going to be Silicon Valley (but it has the hills, bridges, and bay for it). But it does look to me a lot like Atlanta about 20 years ago, with the exception that Lisbon's airport can't match up with Atlanta's - but we are finally getting a new one by around 2030. And that's why I'm so excited about and bullish on Portugal in general and Lisbon in particular. #portugal #startups #entrepreneurship

I was glad to have attended the recent event hosted by our Plug and Play Netherlands team with AmCham. It was a real pleasure to meet so many interesting "innovators". I had a great time and engaging discussions. We saw a lot of interest in open innovation from companies across all industries aiming to innovate further, more efficiently and faster. Most of them are already collaborating with startups but are still interested in increasing their ROI from their open innovation activities. In terms of tech focus areas, the highest interest was in Sustainability and having AI impacting the business in a tangible way. 🚀 #PNPTCNetherlands #Sustainability
After launching inventions like the telescope and Wi-Fi, what’s needed for the Netherlands 🇳🇱 to maintain its 7th place as the world's most innovative country? This week, we hosted an exclusive event with American Chamber of Commerce in the Netherlands (AmCham) to explore the intersection of corporate innovation, venture capital, and startup disruption within the Dutch economy. Following a keynote on open innovation by Dr. Philipp Gneiting, we welcomed distinguished speakers featuring Simone Vooijs from Tata Steel, Ilknur Dönmez from the Ministerie van Economische Zaken en Klimaat, Constantijn Van Oranje-Nassau from Techleap, and Ester Barendregt from RaboResearch, with moderation by Omeed M.. Our takeaways: The last quarter was a record-breaker regarding capital raised for Dutch startups. The Dutch economy suffers due to the pause of the National Growth Fund, but it is crucial to continue nurturing international talent and funding to foster innovation and entrepreneurship in the country. Investments in the Dutch economy should be tailored at a regional level, as each region has its unique technological strengths and growth potential. High-quality education is key and currently requires attention to maintain our strong position in technological advancement. "The innovator’s dilemma" is the phenomenon in which successful, established leaders face challenges in generating disruptive innovation, as every process and decision is designed to mitigate as much risk as possible. To remain competitive, large corporations should allocate at least 10% of their innovation efforts to focus on Horizon 3: disrupting the industry. Thank you to all participants for making this event a tremendous success. Seena Amidi Laurens Vanryckeghem Maria Zymnis Carolina Ferreira da Silva Rafael Ros Montero #PNPTCNetherlands

🚀 Marc’s Top 3 Highlights from #Saarfari Hamburg! 🚀 🌟 One of the most powerful skills for founders is networking and learning from others. Hence, we are so excited to be part of the latest “Saarfari”! The Saarland start-up community is doing amazing work, providing a platform several times a year for entrepreneurs to connect, share ideas, and grow. This time, the #Saarfari took Sophia Eastman (née Saller), Chief Product Officer of CISPA-supported Xpect AI, and Marc Philipp Szathmari, Community Manager within the Technology Transfer division at CISPA Helmholtz Center for Information Security, all the way to Hamburg! 🙌 During the three-day adventure, they visited both start-ups and established companies that are shaping Hamburg’s thriving start-up ecosystem, from the founders of Fritzkola and 1KOMMA5°, a leader in carbon-neutral energy solutions, to Die Techniker, FUNKE Digital, AI.STARTUP.HUB, Factory Hammerbrooklyn, and Deloitte. Marc walked away with three key takeaways: 1️⃣ A peek inside innovation departments of Die Techniker and FUNKE: What’s coming next? What’s hot right now? What resources are they leveraging? 2️⃣ No easy path to founding a start-up: The reported journey by 1KOMMA5° and Fritzkola very inspiring! 3️⃣ The rise of #VentureClienting: Big companies are increasingly becoming the first customers of start-ups' innovative products or services. This gives start-ups not just critical feedback and market insights, but the chance to test their solutions in a real-world corporate environment. Win-win! 🎯 👏🏻 Huge shoutout to the organizers Carolin Ackermann, Bernd Pohl, Daniel Winzent, and Michael Ladendorf for creating such an unforgettable experience! 🙏🏻 #BetterTogether #Saarfari #CISPA #VentureClienting #Hamburg #Innovation #Startups #TechnologyTransfer 📷 #saarfari#saarfari#saarfari
