On April 4, 2024, #EU released the Commission Regulation (EU) 2024/996, introducing finalized changes to the #ingredient lists in Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 (Cosmetics Regulation). EDQM has published the second edition of “Guidance on essential oils in #cosmeticproducts” to help ensure the #safety of cosmetic products in line with European and national cosmetic legislative frameworks. Cosmetic products are often marketed as containing #naturalingredients, including #essentialoils distilled from plants, as a sign of their good quality. Nevertheless, essential oils may have a high sensitising potential for consumers and therefore pose serious #healthrisks. The protection of vulnerable populations such as children or sensitised individuals is particularly important. Sensitisation can occur by skin contact or by inhalation, such as in aromatherapeutic use. 👉The second edition of this guide contains up-to-date #qualitycriteria and recommendations for the manufacture and #safetyassessment of cosmetic products containing natural ingredients. 🚨 Regulation of PFAS in Cosmetics 🚨   Perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are becoming a significant health concern, and the cosmetics industry makes no exception. With the FDA set to publish a comprehensive report next year as part of the MoCRA legislation, it's crucial to stay ahead of these developments.   States are already taking proactive steps to regulate PFAS. For instance, in the last few weeks:   🔹 New Hampshire has introduced draft HB1649, which aims to prohibit the use of PFAS by 2027. 🔹 Connecticut and Vermont have also implemented regulations (SB242 and SB25) banning PFAS use.   Although PFAS are not commonly found in cosmetic formulations, traces can still appear due to interactions with packaging materials. This highlights the importance of identifying and eliminating all potential sources of PFAS contamination.   Let's work together to ensure our products are safe and compliant with these emerging regulations. 📰🚨 European Commission's Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS) has published its Preliminary Opinion on the Biphenyl-2-ol and Sodium 2-biphenylolate used in cosmetic products (CAS/EC No. 90-43-7/201-993-5 and 132-27-4/205-055-6). The preliminary opinion is open for comments until 27 September 2024.
