Next week, Miller Hull Associate, April Ng, AIA, will be presenting Loom House at the National Institute of Building Sciences’s BEST6 Conference in Austin, Texas. April will be joined by 4EA Building Science Principal, Jeff Speert in the session 'A Mid-Century Gem Goes Net Positive.’ Located on a beautifully landscaped bluff overlooking Puget Sound, Loom House is an extensive renovation of a 1960s Pacific Northwest mid-century 2-building residence on Bainbridge Island. As one of only four homes on earth to meet full Living Building Challenge Certification, the impact of Loom House has continued to drive the project forward, advocating for change far beyond its property line. This presentation will focus on key upgrades to the enclosure. These changes include the addition of insulation, air sealing, and glazing replacement while maintaining and enhancing the character of this distinctly Pacific Northwest home. Lessons learned will be shared that could have applicability to other exposed wood structure buildings. April and Jeff will present an analysis of the global warming potential of the interventions and the strategies employed for net positive energy. The project demonstrates hyper-efficient enclosure design and implementation as well as the potential for greening existing building stock. Click the link to register, https://bit.ly/49yQvik.

In May we hosted a masterclass, 'Improving Energy Efficiency in Traditional Buildings' at the Irish Georgian Society City Assembly House in Dublin. The masterclass aligned with the recently published Irish Government Guidance Document on the topic, and the speakers included leading experts in energy conservation, heritage, and architecture. In our video, key speakers and attendees share invaluable tips on retrofitting #traditionalbuildings. Their insights focus on achieving energy efficiency upgrades while maintaining the architectural integrity and character of historic structures. In the process of upgrading #historicbuildings, we also allow for vacant properties to be repurposed and occupied once again. There are grants available to support these types of projects: 🟢 Vacant Property Refurbishment Grant: Up to €50,000 for converting a vacant property into a home or rental. 🟢 Derelict Property Top-up Grant: Additional €20,000 for properties that are structurally unsound, bringing the total grant to €70,000. 🟢 Traditional Farm Buildings Grant: ranging from €4000 to €30,000 covering up to 75% of the conservation work. Applications for 2024 closed on March 27th 2024. 🟢 Built Heritage Investment Scheme (BHIS): Up to €50,000 for custodians and owners of protected structures. 🟢 You can also contact the SEAI to find out what other grants are available. With the insights shared in our video and the use of suitable materials for protecting the integrity of such buildings, we can reduce the building's energy use and be a step closer to meeting our climate targets. https://loom.ly/jCe2wms 👉 'Improving Energy Efficiency in Traditional Buildings' guidance document: https://loom.ly/XxIDmIs 👉 'Caring for our Vernacular Heritage' guidance document: https://loom.ly/qHPv67s 👉 'A Living Tradition' guidance document: https://loom.ly/LqHHYLo 👉 'Built Heritage Investment Scheme' guidance document: https://loom.ly/kiA76Kg #EnergyEfficiency #Retrofit #SustainableBuilding #IrishArchitecture #HeritageBuildings

For my fellow planners and others involved in local climate resilience - this looks like a really useful workshop. "This webinar will focus on the role municipalities can play in adopting cool roofs in the region and tools and resources available to do that, such as: - Educational outreach materials - How to use land use policy and zoning to encourage cool roofs adoption - Model procurement language for municipal facilities retrofitting a roof - Online cool roof suitability map"
While we're feeling the heat this week in Massachusetts, one long-term solution to mitigate the urban heat island effect are cool roofs. We recently hosted a webinar, "The Basics and Benefits of Cool Roofs" (available on our YouTube channel: mapc.ma/coolroofs1), and we'll be hosting another webinar on June 26 at 1:00 p.m. on how municipalities can use cool roofs to advance climate goals - register for that here: https://lnkd.in/eWzWQ-Ec Pictured below, cool roofs at the Annie E. Why should you add the #TallBuildingConference to your events diary? Providing unique insight into the engineering feats that are shaping the UK's city skylines, the Tall Buildings Conference focuses on iconic superstructures that are transforming the high-rise sector. With an impressive array of speakers, the conference brings together those who are at the cutting-edge of the high-rise industry. I will be part of a panel debate titled "Can Skyscrapers be Circular?" To be clear - this debate will not be about curvy buildings, but how circular economy principles can be (or can they?) be integrated into the design, construction and operation of tall buildings. Should be an interesting and thought-provoking conversation. For more information and to book your ticket, visit: https://lnkd.in/eJXDi6BT #TallBuildings #mottmacdonald #circulareconomy
