The World Economic Forum's Global Gender Gap report presents a stark reality: it will take 131 years to close the global gender gap at the current pace. This number has fluctuated worryingly since the pandemic, showing how progress has been hit hard—from an estimated 99.5 years in 2020 to a peak of 136 years in 2021, before slightly improving. These figures highlight an urgent need for action. They remind us why initiatives like the Women Empowerment Council (WE Council) are vital. They are steps towards narrowing the gender gap, emphasizing the ongoing effort required to ensure inclusivity and equality. Today, around the world various programs and amazing initiatives and individual actions and commitments will get some spotlight - I always love to see these. But on International Women's Day, let's also recognize the larger challenge at hand. Achieving gender equality is a long-term mission, filled with hurdles, but it's crucial. This International Women's Day 2024, under the banner of #InspireInclusion, ZeroNorth is proud to spotlight the Women Empowerment Council (WE Council) network, which is a key initiative in our Chennai office originally founded by Alpha Ori Technologies to champion inclusivity in sectors where it's much needed. "The essence of the WE Council lies in our commitment to amplifying women's voices within the tech and shipping industries, providing a platform for growth, leadership, and mutual support," shares Adithya Srinivas Gabbita, who laid the foundation for the council. Aimed at fostering a vibrant community of empowered women, the council organises quarterly meet-ups focusing on topics such as career development, wellbeing, and leadership. "Facilitating this network and driving women's empowerment forward is not just our goal; it's our responsibility," adds Manju Manoj, who now spearheads the initiative. In the tech sector, where women represent only a third of the workforce, initiatives like the WE Council are not just beneficial — they're essential. They lay the groundwork for a more inclusive future, ensuring every individual has the opportunity to shine and succeed. As Chief People Officer Birgitte Pihl emphasises: "This initiative is important to promote inclusivity within the tech and shipping sectors, where it's deeply needed. It aligns perfectly with our ethos of empowering every team member to express their unique combination of personal and professional strengths. By doing so, we're not only fostering a culture of belonging but also enabling our teams to thrive in a truly inclusive environment." As we champion initiatives like the WE Council, we're humbly reminded that our own journey towards true inclusivity is far from complete. Women’s day should be made obsolete! Till the time we need a particular day to celebrate women, it cannot be considered true equality! However, until that day arrives we need to do everything we can to support women every day – be it building startups, workplace hiring, raising families or government representation. For centuries now, women have had to fight for their rightful place and in many countries they continue to do so even today. Freedoms as basic as being able to drive or to wear clothes of their choice are something they wistfully long for. This needs to change! At People Group & Shaadi.com women employees are 50% of the workforce, a ratio higher than most companies in the world - Something we are very proud of as an Indian company 🇮🇳 As an investor, I tend to back a lot of women led businesses (as you might’ve seen on Shark Tank India).
