Good news from India! 🇮🇳 The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is setting a regulatory framework for the approval of cultivated meat and seafood. This comes after almost half (48.7%) of Indians said they would purchase cultivated products in a 2020 survey, a significantly higher proportion than in the West. 🥩🦐 With this significant step, India is joining the likes of countries like Singapore and the USA, who have already approved cultivated chicken, and South Korea which has implemented cultivated food regulations and a framework to provide companies with guidelines to accept submissions. Did you know? DAFF (Quarantine) inspect and test imported food under the Imported Food Inspection Scheme (IFIS). The type and rate of tests applied depend on whether the food is a risk or surveillance food. They publish monthly reports on their website for foods that fail their IFIS inspections for reasons other than non-compliant labelling. These reports list 'failing foods' under the Imported Food Control Act 1992. You can view them here: Failing food reports - DAFF (agriculture.gov.au)

IFAI's Sr. Staff Attorney, Kelli Case (Chickasaw Nation), Staff Attorney Mallory Moore, and Policy Liaison Joseph Damaso, participated in the National Association of Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations (NAFDPIR) annual conference in Auburn, WA. This event is a significant gathering for those dedicated to improving food distribution and nutrition in Native American communities. About NAFDPIR: NAFDPIR plays a crucial role in supporting the Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations (FDPIR). This federal program provides USDA Foods to income-eligible households living on Indian reservations and to Native American families residing in designated areas near reservations or in Oklahoma. The program aims to increase access to healthy foods, offering a variety of fresh fruits, vegetables, frozen meats, whole grains, and traditional foods. Recent Challenges: Since late spring 2024, FDPIR has faced significant challenges due to delays in food distribution. These delays stem from the USDA’s decision to consolidate its warehouse operations from two contractors to one, which has led to disruptions in the supply chain. Many Tribal Nations have reported inconsistent food deliveries, with some receiving expired products or partial shipments. This has forced Tribal governments to find alternative solutions to ensure their communities do not go without essential food supplies. NAFDPIR is committed to addressing these issues and advocating for more reliable food distribution systems. By attending the NAFDPIR conference, IFAI aims to collaborate with other stakeholders to find sustainable solutions and improve the overall effectiveness of the FDPIR. Learn more about how IFAI is working to enhance food sovereignty and security in Indian Country on our website, indigenousfoodandag.com. #foodsovereignty #tribalsovereignty #tribalfoodsystems #tribalagriculture
