We are delighted to announce the launch of “Improving Decision-Making for the Energy Transition: Guidance for Using Strategic Environmental Assessment.” This has been a multi-year initiative for International Association for Impact Assessment that we hope will serve as an essential and timely reference for policymakers, planners, industry leaders, civil society, and other key stakeholders involved in the energy sector. This guidance comes at a critical time. Rapid advancements in green technologies, greater efficiencies driving down cost, and a desire for greater energy security are set to deliver further exponential growth in renewable energy projects. But this will cause people to face a fundamental truth: the energy transition, while vital, is not benign; it is instead messy and challenging and can cause many unintended consequences in a world of complex, interrelated systems. Strategic environmental (and social) assessment (SEA) is a powerful and effective process to address this challenge. It provides a comprehensive framework to see the big picture, to harmonize renewable energy development with the interests of other sectors, address the perspectives of stakeholders, communities, and marginalized groups; and ensure that sustainability considerations are paramount in protecting the future of life on our planet. It improves the planning process by providing a clearer understanding of the consequences for future decisions. This report is a practical guide for undertaking SEA to support strategic-level policymaking, planning, and program development for the energy transition. It describes best practices for conducting SEA across the energy sector and offers detailed methods and case studies across various energy types that illustrate its application in different contexts. It will equip leaders to make informed, sustainable, and wise decisions and will help the public and industry to contribute to these decisions. Such decisions will shape the future of our energy systems to best fit the natural and human environments where the projects will be developed, enabling a just and sustainable energy transition. To clarify, we are NOT advocating for weaker environmental assessments. Our focus is on improving the efficiency and clarity of these processes to meet Australia's renewable energy targets effectively. We CALL for Onshore Wind Farm Guidelines under the EPBC Act. We CALL for improved administration of the EPBC Act with clear processing times. We CALL for a balanced approach that considers both environmental protection and climate mitigation. We CALL for strategic planning to encourage investment in clean energy. We urge The Australian and SkyNews to correct their articles to reflect our actual position. The Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market (ICVCM) has announced that carbon credits issued under eight existing renewable energy methodologies will not receive the high-integrity CCP® (Core Carbon Principles) label. The Integrity Council concluded that current methodologies do not definitively determine if renewable energy projects would proceed without the financial incentives provided by carbon credits. A fundamental principle of high-integrity #carboncredits – additionality – requires that emissions reductions generated by projects would not have happened without the support of #carbonfinance. 🌿 The CCP label provides assurance that each carbon credit represents a verified tonne of emissions reduced or removed from the atmosphere. This fosters greater trust and confidence within the #VCM so it can drive greater climate action.🤝 The ICVCM's science-based ‘two-tick’ approach paves the way for a more robust VCM. We anticipate a growing market for high-integrity CCP-labelled credits that facilitate real-world climate solutions, and expect their volume to increase as more decisions come through the Board. ⚠️ Important Update: Nearly a third of the market's carbon credits from existing renewable energy methodologies will not qualify for its high-integrity CCP® (Core Carbon Principles) label. 🔍 Current Challenges: Current renewable energy methodologies fail to meet the CCP Assessment Framework requirements on additionality. This decision impacts approximately 236 million unretired credits, emphasizing the need for improved standards to ensure genuine emissions reductions. 💡 Encouraging Innovation and Transparency: The Integrity Council highlights the importance of digital technologies and international cooperation in advancing carbon credit markets.
