At Baku #ClimateAction Week, the urgent need for oil and gas companies to #CutMethane emissions took centre stage, with growing calls for countries to ensure importers reduce emissions 📉. We can't miss this window of opportunity. If we reduce emissions, especially in the oil and gas sector, we can slow the pace of warming 🌍🌡️. As our Steve Hamburg notes, "this is really a low-hanging fruit. The industry knows how to produce gas with very little methane emissions." Let's ensure #methane remains on the #COP29 agenda, pushing for collective action that holds the industry accountable. 🔗 More from Kristina Jovanovski via Euronews: https://lnkd.in/d4JrsSCH

It’s exciting to see the two largest emitters of methane be steadfastly committed to reducing emissions. We look forward to the second methane summit, hosted by China and the U.S. at COP29. The momentum we are seeing on reducing methane emissions is critical, since it’s the fastest way to lower warming, buying us time to avoid the worst impacts. #methane #DOS #US #China #climate #COP29 https://lnkd.in/eXZ4-vMb

The incoming president of the COP29 UN climate summit in Azerbaijan told AFP on Friday that his country would keep increasing fossil fuel production “in parallel” with investments in cleaner alternatives. Mukhtar Babayev defended his country’s hosting of the world’s most important climate summit despite its surging natural gas exports, even as UN chief Antonio Guterres renewed calls this week for countries to “phase out” fossil fuels. #Cop29 #fossilfuel #un #fuel #fossil #climatechange #climatesummit

Watch my comments for Outlook Business on global climate finance and how the world is failing at it terribly. There is an urgent need for a credible mechanism and system to ensure climate finance is regulated. Note: The views expressed here don’t reflect the views of organisations I work for in anyway. These are my personal opinions.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗧𝗿𝗶𝗽𝗹𝗲 "𝗔" 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗠𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗲: 𝗔𝗺𝗯𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗔𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀 At #COP29, UN Environment Programme’s Inger Andersen powerfully reminded us of the urgent need to address methane—a super pollutant that warms the planet 𝟴𝟬𝘅 𝗳𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗖𝗢₂ 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗮 𝟮𝟬-𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗱. Methane is rising at unprecedented rates (265% above pre-industrial levels in 2023), and this is not just a climate crisis—it’s a human crisis affecting lives, livelihoods, and ecosystems globally. The 𝗚𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹 𝗠𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗲 𝗣𝗹𝗲𝗱𝗴𝗲 is our opportunity to act, but as Andersen rightly said, we must triple our annual financing and strengthen partnerships like the Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC) to turn plans into action. 🔍 𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘪𝘯𝘴𝘱𝘪𝘳𝘦𝘴 𝘮𝘦 In Nigeria, UNEP’s Methane Alert and Response System prevented a leak equivalent to the emissions of 𝟴𝟬𝟬,𝟬𝟬𝟬 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝗽𝗲𝗿 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿, proving that collaboration works. The launch of the 𝗘𝘆𝗲 𝗼𝗻 𝗠𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗲 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺 is another leap forward for transparency and accountability. These examples show what’s possible when governments, businesses, and communities work together. 💡 𝘒𝘦𝘺 𝘵𝘢𝘬𝘦𝘢𝘸𝘢𝘺𝘴 𝘸𝘦 𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘢𝘮𝘱𝘭𝘪𝘧𝘺: 1️⃣ Methane reduction is 𝘧𝘢𝘴𝘵-𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 and 𝘤𝘰𝘴𝘵-𝘦𝘧𝘧𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘦—a critical lever for slowing global warming while buying time for deeper decarbonization. 2️⃣ Expanding methane action into organic waste management and agriculture is essential to scaling solutions beyond oil and gas. 3️⃣ Nations updating their NDCs must prioritize methane reduction, as it delivers climate, health, and economic benefits all at once. 🎯 𝘈 𝘤𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘵𝘰 𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯: Let’s commit to UNEP’s triple A: 𝘢𝘮𝘣𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯, 𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦𝘴. This is about more than meeting climate targets—it’s about safeguarding our shared future. If we act boldly and swiftly, we can make the impossible possible. 🙌 𝘎𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘵𝘶𝘥𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘷𝘪𝘴𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘴: Huge respect to UN Environment Programme, the COP29 Azerbaijan Presidency, CCAC, and all nations stepping up to tackle methane emissions. Let’s push forward with urgency and innovation. Together, we can turn today’s challenges into tomorrow’s triumphs. What actions or alliances are you building to fight methane and other super pollutants? Let’s learn and grow from one another. 🤝 Pleased to see advancing cooperation to #CutMethane from recent U.S.-China dialogues, including via credible data from the UN Environment Programme's IMEO. 🛰 UNEP’s Methane Alert and Response System, managed by IMEO, harnesses data from a dozen satellites to alert governments and companies of major emission events. 🌎 This example of data-to-action can play a powerful role advancing progress as the world seeks to reduce emissions of methane, which drive about a third of current global warming. 📉 Looking forward to #COP29 in Baku, swift reductions of methane informed and verified by credible data will be crucial for keeping the targets of the Paris Agreement within reach. 📊 UNEP’s IMEO exists to provide open, reliable, and actionable data to the individuals with the agency to reduce methane emissions. It is a core implementer of the Global Methane Pledge and its aim to curb emissions 30% by 2030. The full U.S.-China readout ➡ https://lnkd.in/eXZ4-vMb Learn more about UNEP’s IMEO ➡ unep.org/imeo
