Today is the start of #biodiversitymonth, when every day in September, we're called to celebrate Australia's incredible biodiversity. Project Manager Ryan Ramasamy will be sharing an awesome Reef fact every day this month, so head to our Facebook and look for the hashtag #RyanReckons. But what is biodiversity? Biodiversity is the term used to describe the variety of life on Earth at all its levels, from genes to ecosystems, and the ecological and evolutionary processes that sustain it. It encompasses all living things, from microbes and single-cell algae to marine turtles and whales and their habitats. Importantly, it is not just a measure of how many species there are, rather, it encompasses all natural variation — from genetic differences within one species to variations across a habitat or a whole ecosystem. The Great Barrier Reef relies on its biodiversity, from the animals, plants and algae to the micro-organisms too small for the eye to see. It's this biodiversity that builds such a remarkable ecosystem, as well as supports human use of the #GreatBarrierReef.

Happy International Biodiversity Day, friends! 🌍❤️ Today we celebrate the wondrous variety of life on our planet – from the smallest microorganism to the giant blue whale, each has a unique role in the web of life. It's crucial to remember that biodiversity is not just about the number of species but also about the diversity within species, ecosystems, and even genetic diversity within individual organisms. Biodiversity ensures natural sustainability for all forms of life. Yet, as we're witnessing with concern, our precious biodiversity is under threat. Habitats are being lost; species are becoming extinct at an alarming rate; and genetic diversity is dwindling. It's time for us to turn awareness into action! 💪🌱 Let’s commit to protecting our natural heritage. Plant a tree, support conservation efforts or simply spread the word – every action counts! Remember, when it comes to saving our planet, there is no act too small. Together, we can ensure that future generations inherit a world teeming with life in all its magnificent forms. A #Historic Milestone for #Indigenous Peoples and Biodiversity #Conservation! Today, at the COP16 Colombia we witness a significant breakthrough in global biodiversity policy: the establishment of a new subsidiary body at the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) dedicated to the rights, knowledge, and involvement of indigenous and local communities. This is a historic moment, one that recognizes and formalizes the invaluable role these communities play in preserving our planet’s natural heritage. Why is this so important? Indigenous and local communities have been the stewards of biodiversity for generations, embodying sustainable practices that align with the conservation ethos Article 8(j) of the CBD champions. The creation of a permanent body signifies a long-overdue acknowledgment of their contributions and a commitment to ensuring their voices are not only heard but are central to decision-making processes. This step affirms that biodiversity conservation isn’t complete without the knowledge, traditions, and participation of those who live closest to nature. It’s more than policy, it’s a testament to justice, equity, and the celebration of cultural heritage that enriches our world. A heartfelt congratulations to all involved, and a moment of reflection on how we can continue to uplift and partner with indigenous and local communities in our shared mission for a thriving, biodiverse planet. #IndigenousPeoples #BiodiversityConservation #Article8j #CBD #Sustainability #CulturalHeritage #EnvironmentalJustice

On Biodiversity Day, we celebrate the diversity of the natural world and highlight the diversity of ways to protect it. 🌿 🦥 🐠 🍄 This year's theme, "Be part of the plan," calls on everyone to join the Biodiversity Plan (Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework) and contribute to maintaining balance in Earth's ecosystems. For us, it is also an opportunity to recognize the work of Lemu stewards around the world who are already doing their part through multiple nature-based solutions. From conserving pristine ecosystems, restoring degraded ecosystems, reforesting forests and jungles, and monitoring habitats full of life, to reintroducing plant and animal species, protecting threatened species, contributing to research, and raising community awareness, each steward is making a big difference. Today, we thank them for each of their actions in favor of the natural world and invite you to follow and support their work. Only by joining forces can we ensure a more sustainable future and a world that lives in harmony with nature. 👩🏻🌾 🌎 Does your organization want to safeguard the natural world by partnering with our stewards? We are happy to make it happen. Get in touch and bring your company on board to be part of the plan. #Lemu #Conservation #Biodiversity #BePartOfThePlan

𝗕𝗶𝗼𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰: 𝗕𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻 The International Day for Biodiversity (IDB) - established by the UN following the 1992 Convention - is celebrated every year on 22 May: a special occasion to nurture widespread support for the Convention and its frameworks, to celebrate #Biodiversity, the richness of life - at the level of ecosystems, species and genes - on our Planet. This year the theme is "Be part of the Plan". It's time for all stakeholders to unite and take decisive action to stop and reverse the alarming loss of biodiversity. With this aim and according to our #sustainability values, we have supported the municipality of Prevalle in developing two significant projects: the bee field and the butterfly path. Bees, bumblebees, butterflies and other pollinating insects find a home in these areas. Nearly 90 per cent of all wild flowering plants and 80 per cent of the plants that produce food and products for human consumption depend on pollination, but more than 40 per cent of these species are globally threatened with extinction, particularly wild bees and butterflies. That is why it is important to join forces in projects such as urban biodiversity oases and encourage young people to learn about biodiversity by participating in educational programs and events. #IVARcares #BeGreen #IDB2024 #urbanbiodiversityoases
