They say you can spot a chemical engineer by their love of problem-solving, but apparently, not by their gingerbread house construction skills! 🏠❄️ As you can see, my attempt at structural engineering didn’t quite hold up… Clearly, I should stick to chemical processes rather than civil or structural ones. (If anyone knows the tensile strength of Target icing, do let me know! 🤔😂) I’ve been a bit quieter on here than usual lately. Lots of changes are in motion as I refocus my efforts and prepare for an exciting 2025. It’s been a time of recalibration – both professionally and personally – and I’m feeling energised by the opportunities ahead. 🚀✨ That said, I’m also looking forward to stepping back and spending some time in Edinburgh over the holidays. 🎄 There’s nothing like a bit of festive cheer (and maybe some sturdier gingerbread engineering attempts!) to recharge for the year ahead. To all my connections: thank you for your support, encouragement, and the fantastic conversations this year. Whether we’ve worked together, shared insights, or simply crossed paths here, I appreciate being part of such a thoughtful and inspiring network. 🙏💡 Here’s to finishing 2024 on a high and building a strong (and stable!) foundation for 2025. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have a gingerbread roof to rebuild… 🍪🛠️

Wisdom Wednesday: From the Veld to the Workshop - Insights from Ntozelizwe Benjamin Mqenebe, International Mechanical Engineer Greetings, engineering friends! Today, on Wisdom Wednesday, I come to you from my perspective as Ntozelizwe Benjamin Mqenebe, an international mechanical engineer with roots in the South African veld. 1. Ingenuity is Everywhere, Even in the Bush: Growing up, I wasn't surrounded by fancy workshops, but by the resourcefulness of my community. We fixed tools with what we had, adapted machines to new uses, and constantly tinkered to make life easier. That spirit of innovation is what truly drives a great mechanical engineer. 2. Ubuntu: Building Together is Stronger Than Building Alone: "Ubuntu" is a Zulu philosophy that translates to "humanity towards others." In engineering, this means understanding that no project is a one-man show. We are strongest when we collaborate, share knowledge, and leverage the expertise of others. 3. Embrace Challenges as Opportunities to Learn: Africa presents unique engineering challenges - harsh environments, limited resources, and a constant need for adaptation. These challenges are not roadblocks, but opportunities to develop innovative solutions. Never be afraid to tackle a tough problem, for it is within those struggles that true growth happens. 4. Technology Should Serve Our Communities: The most impressive machine is useless if it doesn't improve people's lives. Focus on projects that address the needs of your community, be it developing drought-resistant irrigation systems or creating accessible tools for those with disabilities. 5. Knowledge Should Be Shared, Not Hoarded: Just as the wisdom of the elders is passed down in my culture, knowledge in engineering should be readily shared. Mentor young minds, encourage curiosity, and empower the next generation of African engineers to take on the world. Bonus Wisdom: Never lose sight of the wonder of engineering. From the complex mechanics of a car engine to the simple elegance of a windmill, there's a poetry to be found in how things work. Remember: As African mechanical engineers, we have a unique perspective and a vital role to play on the world stage. Let's use our ingenuity, collaborative spirit, and focus on community needs to build a brighter future for all. Day 96 100 Days Writing Challenge Topic: Basics of Marine Engineering Alright, so picture this: you’ve got these massive ships carrying thousands of tons across oceans, and they need to keep going without breaking down. That’s where marine engineering comes in. Think of it like mechanical engineering, but ocean-proof. First up, the engines. We’re talking huge engines that are basically the size of a house, designed to run for days, even weeks. And they don’t just cool off with regular fans like a car engine—they use seawater to keep from overheating, which is honestly pretty clever. Then there’s the hull—the main body of the ship. This has to be strong enough to handle crashing waves and all that weight, but also shaped to reduce drag so it can move smoothly. Engineers work on getting that balance just right, so the ship doesn’t waste tons of fuel. Steering these giants is a whole other story. It’s not like driving a car. Ships have special hydraulic systems and stabilizers to help keep them steady in rough seas and to make sure they don’t veer off course. So next time you’re near a big ship or on a ferry, remember, it’s all about engineering that’s built to handle the sea’s crazy demands. From the engine to the hull, everything’s made to keep these floating beasts on the move, no matter what. Kind of cool when you think about it! #mechanicalengineering #student #writingchallenge #lautech
