I just caught CNN's Outfront’s segment on the weather chaos gripping half the country. 250 million people affected by the extreme weather right now. CNN did mention climate crisis, which is nice. A pat on the back for basic awareness, right? But it felt about as deep as a kiddie pool. Fossil fuels? CO2? Sure, those buzzwords got a mention, but where’s the in-depth solutions based/ constructive journalism? Bill Nye even chimed in, the Science Guy himself! Apparently, scientists have been, you know, warning about this kind of weather for, oh, I don't know, years. Funny, Erin Burnett didn't seem too interested in digging into that. Maybe the show is too busy prepping their next segment: Justin Timberlake's recent "run-in" with the law. Now that's some breaking news, right? I appreciate the weather updates. But between you and me, is this really the best CNN can offer on a crisis impacting millions? Missing the voices of actual climate experts? Barely scratching the surface of the science? Feels like they're reading from a script a decade out of date. We deserve better. We deserve real conversations, with real experts, about the very real threat of climate change. Maybe if we keep calling it out, Outfront will actually get out front on this issue. Just a thought.

In this episode of Green Sense we talked to Jo Linehan, Editor of the CLIMATE supplement with the Sunday Times. We discuss Climate Journalism and what we can all do to raise our voices and stand up for the planet. Follow here at: @jo_the_futurist (insta) Jo’s top 3 tips for climate action are: 1 - Take 3 for the sea. Pick up 3 pieces of rubbish every time you are out for a walk. 2 - Ask the hard questions from your politicians. Elections are comimg up and the more we ask what they’re doing about it, the more they’ll put it on their agenda. 3 - Divest your pension. Where is your pension invested? Most have big oil companies in their portfolios. Tune in for a healthy dose of climate optimism! ICYM our webinar on collaboration and community in climate reporting.... 👇
“This is my story—and I want to tell it.” When it comes to reporting on the impacts of climate change on small communities, local journalists often have the inside track, says Mercy Abang, MBA of Unbias The News. The challenges around the understanding of the issues, the language used—and ultimately, the embracing of the problem—are exacerbated the more the message becomes detached from the communities.
