New Zealand’s second emissions reduction plan sets out how the Government will meet our climate change target for the second half of this decade. The Government’s plan focuses on actions that will drive significant emissions reduction. The plan helps keep New Zealand’s emissions to no more than 305 megatonnes between 2026 and 2030, allowing New Zealand to meet our second emission budget and setting the foundation to meet our 2050 net zero target. The UK has pledged to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2050. However, the Climate Change Committee has expressed concerns that the UK could miss its future targets due to 'worryingly slow' recent progress. Additionally, in May this year, the High Court ruled for the second time in two years that the government would have to redraft its net zero strategy, as the current plan lacks sufficient details on how future targets will be achieved.
