If you’re 16–25 and have a fresh and innovative tech-led idea, The Young Entrepreneurs Challenge could help you get your business off the ground—or if you’ve already launched, boost it to the next level. Business proposals must meet the following criteria: ⭐ Be legal in all mainland European countries. ⭐Be either a pre-start (not yet trading); or not have been trading for more than three years and have an annual turnover of less than £100,000 (€120,000) in its most recent financial year. ⭐Be the applicant's own idea and not infringe on the copyright, patent or intellectual property of others. The overall winner receives a £10,000 grant. The winner also attends the One Young World 2025 Global Summit in Munich, Germany. There's a lot to unpack with the 25th Global Entrepreneurship Monitor. A few interesting points of note: Around half of early-stage entrepreneurs in both Northern Ireland were also motivated by making a difference in the world. Some great examples of that here like Inclutech.co! Interesting point, Ian Smyth, that starting a business to continue a family tradition is the least motivating factor and is significantly lower than all other reasons. The NECI (National Entrepreneurship Context Index) score for NI of 4.2 is interesting - a score below 5 out of 10 means the conditions for entrepreneurship have 'room for improvement'. Our friends in Scotland rank 14th with a score of 4.9 and UK is 23rd with 4.6. The lowest score within that NECI index for NI, which is made up of 13 parts, was entrepreneurial education at school age, going in a downward trend with scores of 3.71 in 2020, 3.56 in 2021 and 2.83 in 2023. Would be interested in your thoughts on this Carol Fitzsimons MBE. But one of the biggest things that stood out to me is a perennial Northern Ireland trend that's also going in the wrong direction - fear of failure. Taking non-entrepreneurial individuals of working age in Northern Ireland (who agreed there were good start-up opportunities here), there was a rise in the number who were afraid to start a business in case it might fail. This rose from 60.6% in 2022 to 62.9% in 2023. There was an opposite trend across the UK with the 2022 figure of 58% decreasing to 56.5%. More still needs to be done to take away that fear of failure here to help those people who won't currently take the leap because they think they'll fail. There's much more to read, link below. A 2022 study by Tryson Yangailo and Abubaker Qutieshat suggests the following personal characteristics drive entrepreneurial intention and success: “...self-efficacy, conscientiousness, locus of control, need for achievement, and innovativeness as the indisputably and unarguably key top personal characteristics that predict both entrepreneurial intentions and guarantee entrepreneurial success. The study also finds that characteristics that predict entrepreneurial intention also guarantee entrepreneurial success.”
