Our intern Villemo Tomasdotter was given the opportunity to participate in #COP16 these past two weeks through the organization Nordic Youth Biodiversity Network (NYBN). "It was clear that more companies chose to be present at this high-level biodiversity summit than before. I hope this is a sign that biodiversity aspects are starting to catch up with climate change issues and that this crisis can receive a similar level of attention. I believe many companies have realized that impacts on nature and climate are interconnected and that both issues must be tackled simultaneously to avoid negative consequences for biodiversity in the name of climate action. We can never achieve climate goals if we undermine the world’s biodiversity; they are intertwined and must support each other." shares Villemo upon returning from the international conference on biological biodiversity in Cali, Colombia. #biodiversity #climate #PazConLaNaturaleza

COP16 Biodiversity Summit - Key takeaways 🦋 #COP16 ended on Saturday, November 2nd on a mixed note. 👉 "Delegates from 177 nations agreed to language saying that companies “should” pay conservation fees for genetic digital sequence information (DSI) from which they profit. Corporate lobbyists ensured this measure was voluntary, but tropical nations could build DSI fees into their laws." 👉 "COP16 delegates also agreed to give Indigenous peoples and local communities a place at the negotiating table regarding conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity, with “fair and equitable” sharing of benefits." 👉 "Oceans got a boost as a coalition of 11 philanthropies pledged $51.7 million to identify and expand marine protected areas in open oceans. The new Tropical Forest Forever Facility (TFFF) also moved toward launch. This novel funding mechanism could offer an estimated $4 billion annually to 70 tropical nations." 👉 "NGOs and large philanthropies identified obstacles that must be cleared to redirect $1.7 trillion in national subsidies that now annually harm biodiversity. On the down side, COP16 utterly missed addressing the failure of wealthy nations to keep financial pledges to protect nature with $20 billion by 2025 and $200 billion by 2030." Here we go! Whilst the 16th annual #priinperson is taking place in Toronto, I’m here in Sydney where the Global Nature Positive Summit 2024 is about to kick off with a welcome to country by the Gadigal people of the Eora Nation, traditional owners of the land on which the summit takes place It is an important year for ambition on Nature and Biodiveristy, with an increasing look to how investors and others can contribute to a #naturepositive future and where in a few weeks we’ll sea global leaders converge at #cop16. This will be the first Biodiversity COP since the adoption of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. It will be a key moment to see how parties to the Convention are aligning their National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) with the Framework. I have high hopes to see more alignment between climate, nature and social goals and actions. Principles for Responsible Investment

🌍 As the world gathers for #COP16 in Cali, Colombia it's vital to recognize that Latin America and the Caribbean are home to two-thirds of the world's species. This region's rich #biodiversity is essential for global ecological balance. To combat the triple planetary crisis—climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution—the Global Environment Facility has invested over $5 billion dollars, leveraging more than $30 billion in co-financing. These investments are crucial for sustainable development and preserving our planet. Protecting biodiversity is not just an environmental imperative but also a pathway to sustainable #EconomicGrowth. By investing in nature, we create jobs, support livelihoods, and foster resilient economies that can thrive in harmony with our natural world. Let's continue to support and invest in initiatives that protect our natural world and drive sustainable economic growth. 🌱 #HealthyPlanetHealthyPeople #GEFatCOP16Colombia #GEFpartnership
The Latin America and Caribbean region is a biodiversity superpower, housing two-thirds of the world’s species of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, plants, and insects. However, this natural wealth is under significant threat from climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution. The Global Environment Facility (GEF) has responded to these challenges with investments of over $5 billion, complemented by an additional $30 billion in co-financing. The goal is clear: halt and reverse the loss of flora and fauna by 2030 and head towards being "nature positive." With integrated programming, Conservation Trust Funds, and a focus on political coherence, the GEF is leading the charge for a healthier planet. Watch the full video to discover how these initiatives are galvanizing hope and defining the path forward. https://lnkd.in/e8Ww32nQ #GEFatCOP16Colombia | #COP16Colombia | COP16 Colombia | UN Biodiversity

Humanity cannot live without nature, but nature doesn't need humans. As Susana Muhamad puts it, the biodiversity crisis is the other side of the climate crisis coin, and we must work on restoring nature for the sake of future generations. Nature will recover, but it might take a couple of million years. Will we be around to see this? At COP16 Colombia, I hope that Biodiversity gets a mechanism to measure and appreciate the value of biodiversity. We need a mechanism similar to carbon offsets, to increase funding for biodiversity projects. In this mechanism, we should avoid the flaws of the Paris Agreement. https://lnkd.in/dhVET5zK #cop16 #biodiversity #colombia

Why do we need to link Carbon Credits with Biodiversity credits? The Climate Change and Biodiversity crises are extremely complex and life-threatening problems. Carbon Credits are a tool to fund nature regeneration projects. Unfortunately, all too often, biodiversity is not taken into account, and because monocultures are easier to plan and therefore cheaper, this is what is implemented. Therefore "Biodiversity Credits" might be the way forward. These could be combined with Carbon Credits to channel funding into projects that benefit both problems. I have just received my accreditation and plan to report from the blue zone at the Biodiversity COP-16 in Cali later this year and share interviews with experts from the event. Follow me to stay tuned! #biodiversity #climatechange #cop16
