🔎 Business commitment to the climate, international wind energy and the final deal ... Catch up with what happened at COP29 last week. 1️⃣ Contributing to a fund to help developing nations prepare for climate change is "feasible" for wealthier countries, economists have found. "The climate crisis demands a scale of funding that far surpasses our current efforts," says Austria's climate youth COP29 delegate David Jablonski. "Without substantial investment, vulnerable communities will continue to face escalating climate impacts, and the transition to renewable energy will be delayed." https://lnkd.in/eWx2Yqrd 2️⃣ Green business leaders told national delegations at COP29 that they remain committed to the environment. "Only by consistently showing up can you hope to have your viewpoints represented – that goes for overall climate ambition, and for specifics such as the importance of buildings in the green transition," writes Julie Kjestrup, head of policy and thought leadership at VELUX. "Certainly, others won't be doing our job for us." https://lnkd.in/egXkQTni 3️⃣ At COP28 last year, countries vowed to triple their wind energy. The Guardian carried out an assessment and found the world has "struggled" to keep up. "The world’s renewable energy capacity was about 3.4 terawatts in 2022. To meet COP28 targets countries would need to reach just over 11TW by 2030. It won't be easy," writes Kyriakos Gialoglou, EU government affairs and carbon markets lead at Climeworks. https://lnkd.in/e6iW6qze 4️⃣ The goal to limit global warming to 1.5C above the pre-industrial average, set at COP in 2015, is now "deader than a doornail", according to climate researchers. "Scientists are tripping over themselves trying to find a way to best communicate the urgency in a way that creates sufficient action," says broadcaster Craig Foster. "So far, the message is not getting through in a resounding enough way. The sophisticated industry campaigns to undermine the credibility of science, or to urge caution rather than haste, have been influential enough to curb the will to act." https://lnkd.in/e7dQ3QPU 5️⃣ Nations reached agreement on a trillion-dollar finance deal at COP29, aimed at providing assistance to developing countries dealing with climate change. It has had a mixed reception. "Vulnerable nations argue (rightly so!) this deal lacks immediate and guaranteed support for those most impacted by climate change," says Hans Stegeman, the chief economist at Triodos Bank. "Campaigners labelled the agreement a 'betrayal', highlighting the over-reliance on private funding and uncertain levies (and they are probably right)." https://lnkd.in/ezTfTp4M 🎙️ What do you think of the result of COP29? ▶️▶️ A central question is the critical 1.5°C threshold—the most ambitious target set by the Paris Agreement. Experts continue to ask: when will this threshold be reached? According to the IPCC, it could happen between 2030 and 2035. Meanwhile, the International Energy Agency (IEA) estimates that global fossil fuel production must decrease by 55% by 2035 if we hope to limit warming to 1.5°C. ▶️▶️ A top priority for climate advocates is ensuring agreement on NDCs, which enable countries to define their greenhouse gas reduction targets. The commitment by the COP hosts (COP28, COP29, and COP30) to include emissions cuts compatible with the 1.5°C target in their NDCs by 2035 is both significant and promising. ▶️▶️ COP29, a pivotal moment ahead of next year’s milestone COP30 in Belém, Brazil, is anticipated to drive decisive action on climate commitments. ▶️▶️ As we look toward a climate-resilient future, refrigeration and cold-chain systems will be key to achieving sustainability goals. The International Institute of Refrigeration is committed to leading this transition by promoting best practices, providing technical guidance, and supporting policies that encourage the deployment of clean and energy efficient refrigeration and cold-chain solutions for all communities. ============================= As with every COP, AOB GROUP is pleased to publish this international magazine, bringing together expert articles from around the globe. Progress is never a straight line, but we're on the right path The COP29 UN Climate conference just wrapped up and here's my key takeaways: • Tripling Climate Finance: COP29 agreed to triple the annual climate finance for developing countries from $100 billion to $300 billion by 2035 • Enhanced Carbon Trading: COP29 finalized rules establishing a framework for international carbon trading to enhance cooperation and funding for emission reduction projects • Commitment to Renewable Energy: Reinforced the global commitment to transition away from fossil fuels and triple renewable energy capacity. • Urgent Action Required: Highlighted the critical need for immediate and effective climate action to meet the 1.5°C warming limit. I'm optimistic for the future of our world's transition to renewable energy. According to the International Energy Agency, renewable energy has a projected growth of nearly 5,500 GW of new capacity by 2030. Lower cost of energy and the abundant job opportunities will only encourage more development. #RenewableEnergy #Sustainability #EnergyTransition

Would request expert comments & implementation of the following Three Key decisions of The United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) 1. To achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, a historic result of COP28 was the “beginning of the end” of the fossil fuel era by laying the ground for a swift, just and equitable transition. 2. The stocktake calls on Parties to take actions of tripling of renewable energy capacity and doubling energy efficiency improvements by 2030. 3. Phase-down of unabated coal power, phasing out inefficient fossil fuel subsidies.

Are countries’ energy actions in line with their climate agreements❔ At COP28, countries agreed to a landmark energy package of the Global Stocktake to triple renewable energy use, and double energy efficiency while transitioning away from fossil fuels. The key players in global climate action are converging right now in Azerbaijan at a Heads of Delegation meeting for COP29, and the question may be asked - Are we keeping up with our commitments? This week, the International Institute for Sustainable Development forecast that the fossil fuel expansion plans of wealthy countries will discharge almost 12 billion tonnes of toxic planet-heating emissions.☢️ ‼️The science is clear. Urgent action to reduce emissions and keep global warming within the 1.5oC limit is the only way to avoid the most devastating impacts of climate change. Enhanced global investment in renewable energy use will be key to safeguarding a more sustainable future for the Caribbean and all small island developing states #RenewableEnergy #Cop28 #Cop29 #FossilFuels #ClimateChange

COP29 failure agenda: Voluntary financing from fossil fuel countries and companies; clean hydrogen; increase energy storage 6x 2022 by 2030. The template plea for wealthy countries to help poor countries cut emissions will be the old movie we have all seen before. Funding campaigns for poor countries will also include grants to address climate catastrophes. We are now have just 2 months to go for a credible plan to reduce global emissions 45% by 2030, as per the Paris Agreement. As Greta Thunberg said, COPs are "Blah, blah, blah." With thanks to Azerbaijan. Could not have done this without you. Guess we will have to rely on competition with China to foster a global green transition. https://lnkd.in/ecM3r2RV
