IMRA Stories from the Field: 2018 Recipient Broc Burke, MD, PhD As an instructor and cardiothoracic anesthesiology fellow at Washington University and Barnes Jewish Hospital, Broc Burke, MD, PhD, developed a long-term goal to become an independent investigator in perioperative and critical care bedside neurological monitoring. With his experience as a Senior Staff Engineer/Scientist and the backing of a dedicated mentoring committee, he succeeded to obtain a 2018 IARS Mentored Research Award for his investigation entitled, “Development of a Real-Time, Bedside, Brain Functional Connectivity Monitor.” Dr. Burke set out to successfully develop a non-invasive, quantitative measurement that correlates with the NIH stroke scale. His success led him to the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Center as an Assistant Professor. With a new institution and role, new research questions arose. His current studies aim to improve the diagnosis and care of critically ill patients with, or at risk for, ischemic stroke. His former lab continues to pursue his important, previous academic endeavors. The IMRA has and will continue to be a critical point in his career. #IARSAwards #IMRAStories #MedicalResearch #CardiothoracicAnesthesia #PerioperativeMedicine #CriticalCare #StrokeResearch #NeurologicalMonitoring #ResearchAward Read his interview: https://ow.ly/m77V50Usaxy

IMRA Stories from the Field: 2020 Recipient Yusuke Sugasawa, MD, PhD In 2020, Yusuke Sugasawa, MD, PhD, became the first IMRA recipient from a Japanese university. His research study, “Structural Basis of Lipid and Anesthetic Action on TMEM16 Scramblases,” sought to characterize cholesterol binding sites on TMEM16 scramblases and determine how cholesterol occupancy of these sites modulates scramblase activity. Now, four years later, as an associate professor, Dr. Sugasawa and his team are preparing to publish their novel insights into the interaction between lipids and TMEM16 scramblases, which will contribute to the development of structure-based drug design of TMEM16 modulators, proving invaluable for treatment of perioperative bleeding and neurological dysfunction in the future. Dr. Sugasawa is hopeful for a steady growth in the number of the anesthesiology physician-scientists working on basic science to elucidate molecular mechanisms of anesthetics around the world! #IMRAStories #IARSAwards #ResearchSupport #AnesthesiologyResearch #MolecularMechanisms #PhysicianScientists #ResearchInnovation #BiomedicalResearch Read his interview: https://ow.ly/gMjN50U8kzf

WoW : what an inspiring article ! Dr Ronald Dworkin, an #anesthesiologist, explains what #AI can’t do in a clinical setting An AI-powered #machine can “mechanically harvest” the #organs of a brain 🧠 dead donor But only a #human #doctor can “tenderly remove” these organs from one body so they can be used in another As the #theologian Christian Brugger argues in an article in The Journal of #Medicine and #Philosophy (see: https://lnkd.in/eHaNjpcM) “Since we should not treat as corpses what for all we know might be living human beings, it follows that we have an obligation to treat brain-dead (BD) individuals as if they were living human beings” As a #Hindu, I believe that — even if science can’t prove it — we remain #conscious even after our #brain dies. A bit of that #consciousness lingers on in our dead body. A dignified removal of #organs from a brain-dead donor’s body by a #human #doctor is the best way to honor the “humanness” of that donor.

Read our latest publication on examiner’s workload for #edaic examination: Examiner workload comparison: three structured oral examination formats for the European diploma in anaesthesiology and intensive care https://lnkd.in/eap4rSst Our study found high examiner workload across all formats of the European Diploma in Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care exams, with **online exams not associated with lower NASA TLX scores** and resulting in higher frustration and workload. Male examiners and those spending more time on preparation faced higher workloads. Despite differences, workload did not affect marking or scores. Hybrid exams, blending online and face-to-face, slightly reduced workload, offering a balanced, efficient, and accessible option. #esaic #edaic #hcl Andrey Varvinskiy Rodolphe Di Loreto Hugues Scipioni Markus Klimek, MD, PhD, DEAA, EDIC, FESAIC Prof. Dr. med.
