Article published in the Journal of Cardiovascular Pharmacology featuring Professor Salvatore De Rosa, a specialist in Cardiovascular Diseases at #DSMC of Università 'Magna Graecia' di Catanzaro. 🔬📄 "Management of patients treated with oral anticoagulant therapy undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention with stent implantation: the PERSEO Registry" explores the efficacy of anticoagulant therapies in patients undergoing coronary interventions with stent implantation. 📈 In this study, conducted on 1234 patients from February 2018 to February 2022, antithrombotic regimens in patients on oral anticoagulants (OAC) undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) were examined. The analysis revealed that the use of direct oral anticoagulants (DOAC) resulted in a lower rate of net adverse clinical events (NACE) compared to vitamin K antagonists (VKA). Additionally, dual antithrombotic therapy (DAT) showed a reduction in major bleedings compared to triple antithrombotic therapy (TAT). 📉 Key results: ➡️ 16% of patients treated with DOAC experienced NACE, compared to 23% of patients on VKA. ➡️ DAT showed fewer major bleedings compared to TAT (2% vs 5%). 🔍 These real-world data highlight the importance of choosing the optimal antithrombotic regimen to improve outcomes in patients on OAC undergoing PCI. #Cardiology #Anticoagulants #PCI #Stent #MedicalResearch #CardiovascularHealth #JournalOfCardiovascularPharmacology

The answer to yesterday’s #ClinicalChallenge question is: D. Recombinant ADAMTS13 can rapidly raise the ADAMTS13 activity levels. It was FDA approved for treatment of hereditary thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP), and it also may have a role in individuals with immune TTP who have refractory disease and/or cannot receive therapeutic plasma exchange. As AbbVie and NeuroDerm race toward potential Parkinson's disease approvals later this year, the companies presented strong data at last week’s American Academy of Neurology 2024 annual meeting for their respective continuous subcutaneous levodopa infusions. Both companies are developing novel delivery systems that allow 24-hour continuous subcutaneous delivery of their drug candidates, which according to Erela Dana, director of neurology at data analytics firm GlobalData Plc, could “improve the rate of compliance while reducing risk of motor fluctuations and levodopa-induced complications.” NeuroDerm is ahead of AbbVie in the race to U.S. commercialization, but Dana notes that if both products receive FDA approval, real-world evidence and longer-term follow-up data “could provide a competitive edge in the absence of a head-to-head trial.” #biotech #biopharma #ParkinsonsDisease #levodopa

Indeed, thanks Saroja Ramanujan for pointing this out. There is an equally fascinating publication by @Ron Sender, Ron Milo and team on The total mass, number, and distribution of immune cells in the human body: https://lnkd.in/dT-RRHcb . These are fundamental data for developing immuno-oncology therapies where we try to direct the human immune system to fight cancer cells. Intuitively it is clear that in the fight of immune cells against cancer cells it matters what the numbers are. While this is well studied in vitro by exploring the E:T ratio (effector-to-tumor cell ratio) it is much more difficult to translate these findings to human: What is the concentration of immune cells in human tumors? How does it depend on tumor type? How does it vary between patients? How does it change over time? How high does it need to be to effectively destroy the tumor when being activated? I would love to see this work extended from healthy organs to disease in particular tumors.
What a great publication: The distribution of cellular turnover in the human body by Ron Sender and Ron Milo (https://lnkd.in/dMqpUcs6). Their research integrated ubiquity, mass and lifespan of all major cell types to achieve a comprehensive quantitative description of cellular turnover. Might sound unexciting to the unconscious reader but for Quantitative Systems Pharmacology #QSP modeller this is an invaluable resource to inform our mathematical models for new drug development.
