In a recent study, UC Berkeley Public Health Professor of Epidemiology Sandi McCoy's international research team answered a longstanding question about short-term financial incentives: Once the money stops, are patients less likely to continue medical care than if had they never received incentives at all? The study of HIV patients living in Tanzania who received short-term financial incentives to remain in care found that retention and viral suppression rates remained stable post-incentives. Patients did not experience worse outcomes after the payments stopped. 🌟 Exciting News! 🌟 I'm thrilled to share that our latest article has just been published in the Open Forum Infectious Diseases! We examined mortality trends and predictors of AIDS- and non-AIDS mortality in the PISCIS cohort of PLWH in Catalonia and the Balearic Islands, Spain, from 1998 to 2020. We observed a significant decrease in mortality rates among PLWH over the past two decades, with a notable shift towards non-AIDS-related causes. Today, June 27, is National HIV Testing Day! #CSTE joins Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in helping to encourage our #PublicHealth colleagues to share information on free HIV self-tests and other resources found here: bit.ly/3KY8WmD. Testing programs have been critical contributors to the 12% decrease in estimated HIV infections from 2018 to 2022, and a major factor contributing to ongoing disparities in HIV is a lack of access to and implementation of HIV testing and screening programs. #StopHIVTogether #epi #epidemiology

🎉🎉 FIVE YEARS in the oven! Thank God! I am so proud that it's finally out! This is the first attempt to reconstruct the history and geographic spread of the current predominant subtype of HIV-1, CRF01_AE, in the Philippines. Here we: 📌 Affirmed the introduction of HIV-1 CRF01_AE in the Philippines during the mid-1990s to the late 1990s, replacing subtype B as the prevailing subtype observed today. 📌 Observed that the spread of CRF01_AE aligns with global HIV epidemic with no substantial ongoing transmission from sporadic sources 📌 Suggested that after the single introductory event in Luzon, the CRF01_AE subtype was exported to the Visayas and Mindanao regions. Note that Luzon has the densest, busiest, and highly connected areas in the Philippines. 📌 Supported the effects of past public health interventions on the transmission rates as reflected in the fluctuations of the effective reproductive number (Re), potentially averting hundreds of thousands of infections in 2020. ✨ This study provides a bigger picture of the HIV epidemic that can definitely be used to inform public health measures towards the control of HIV in the Philippines and emphasizes the need for vigilance in monitoring the dynamics of HIV subtypes. Congratulations to Rajat Mishra, Tukaram Kendre (M.Pharm. Scholars), Priyanka Guha (PhD Scholar) and the entire team for publishing research paper "Epidemiological determinants and quality of life in PLHIV patients with tuberculosis in Bihar State, India." Key Findings: - Male patients are more likely to contract HIV-TB co-infection than female patients. - Advanced WHO staging, male gender, past history of TB, and opportunistic infections are strong predictors of co-infection. - Low CD4+ T cell count increases the risk of developing TB due to HIV/TB co-infection. - HIV-TB patients have a significantly lower quality of life compared to HIV-only patients. Why it matters: Understanding the epidemiological determinants of HIV-TB co-infection is crucial for developing effective prevention and treatment strategies.
