Dr. Appolinaire Tiam, Vice-President of Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation and Professorial Lecturer with the Department of Epidemiology, published study results in the BMC Health Services Research Journal titled “Understanding health systems challenges in providing Advanced HIV Disease (AHD) care in a hub and spoke model: a qualitative analysis to improve AHD care program in Malawi”. Thirty-two interviews were conducted with healthcare workers and lay cadres, and more than half of them reported the Advanced HIV Disease training sufficiently prepared them to handle patients. Still, weaknesses in supply availability and patient referral systems were challenging. With the hub-and-spoke model to combat these challenges, Advanced HIV Disease care can increase for patients.
A very insightful article on Advanced HIV Disease which highlights concrete opportunities for QI in the training and service provision.
