Lithium-Ion (Li) batteries have become the standard for powering everything from power tools and vehicles to augmenting power grids. If you look around your home or office you also find them in your robot vacuum, calculator, phone and even on your keychain. Many of the powered toys, tools, and other gifts this Christmas season will be powered by these rechargeable batteries. Unfortunately, there is a silent risk that comes from the connivence of these small power sources. Although rare with original equipment manufactured (OEM) batteries, when damaged, submerged in water or when OEM batteries are replaced by cheaper, non-Underwriter Labs (UL) or other certified standards testing organizations, the risk dramatically increases. The threat is thermal runaway, followed by fire and/or explosion along with the off gassing of toxic gases and heavy metals. To date, there is no solution to putting a Li battery fire out. TEEX and others are working on solutions, but today the best practice is to contain the fire and let it burn itself out as the energy dissipates. These fires are also 3 to 5 times higher than a gasoline fire, causing new threats to roadways, EV charging areas and home charging.
