If you've recently moved somewhere new or don't feel settled in your current place, this post is for you… It's hard to make friends as an adult, plain and simple, but it is doable! It will require you to put yourself out there more than you normally would, especially for my fellow introverts, but the hard work will pay off in the end. Here are 10 ways you can work to build the social life and community you desire from scratch: 🎶 Go to a concert by yourself and link up with a group or other solo concertgoers 🏆 Join a sports league and get to know your teammates and others in the league (this is how I met the amazing Ian DeGroot pictured below!) 🍻 Go to the work happy hours and mingle with people from different departments 🌄 Try a Meetup event like a scavenger hunt or sunrise hike and get to know others with similar interests 🎧 Find an event on Eventbrite like a silent disco and chat with other people there 👩🌾 Find a local event happening like a festival or farmers market and talk to some other locals 🛒 Talk to people in your local grocery or clothing store (don't go through self check out so you force an interaction!) 🆕 Tell people you meet you're new and ask for recommendations of what to do in your city as an icebreaker 🏖 Go to a popular spot, like the beach at sunset, and chat with random people sitting near you 👋 Say hi to your neighbors and try striking up a conversation And if you're doubting if these actually work… this is how I met most of my very good friends when moving to a new city (which I've done multiple times)! Comment below if you're planning on trying any of these :) And if you're looking for more support for your personal situation… book a discovery call today: https://lnkd.in/g5r4yTVB

How does the control teens have over how they show up online impact their ability to show up in real life? In 2022, we interviewed university aged teens about their friendships, loves lives and relationships. We learned that offline interactions were a key aspect of the relationships they valued most. We also learned that the buffer young people enjoy in asynchronous interactions like messaging can get in the way of in-real-life meetups. Even with the best intentions, interactions that take place over messaging platforms create room to curate how we show up, and even a small amount of curation can create expectations that are stressful to live up to in person.

In the City or In the Wild? Don’t overthink it. If your org is committed to consistent meetups for your team, this is a fun one to play with over multiple years. If you’ve always been in a major city, go ahead and rip the next one in a more rural landscape. Surprise! Get feedback from the team and adjust the future venue sourcing accordingly. My general sense talking to folks tasked with their company retreats each week is that it’s easy and common to get into analysis paralysis when exploring venues. As long as your doing a deep dive on the venue contract prior to signing (budget), rip it, have fun and get feedback along the way from your team. There is no perfect destination, venue or itinerary out there for everyone on your team. So, let’s have some fun and #gettogether.

Late registrations giving you a headache? 🤯 Here are two game-changing solutions to keep your events on track: 1️⃣ Open up the event app early: Give your attendees a head start by making your event app accessible well in advance. Let them explore, plan, and engage before the big day. 📱✨ 2️⃣ Bundle early registration with access to a community or group within the app: Create a sense of belonging and exclusivity by offering early birds a VIP pass to a dedicated community or group. Foster connections and build anticipation! 🤝🎉 Don't let late registrations stress you out. Embrace these strategies and watch your events thrive!

Meetup more than doubled their price, out of nowhere, less than a month before the renewal of my organizer subscription. These are the facts, so far. Is it time to jump ship? Here's what it looks like on my side: I'm having a hard time building up a meetup about Next.js in the Munich are. It's quite a niche and it always requires speakers to even have somewhat regular events. Finding these is the hardest thing. And it's something Meetup.com can't help with at all. Instead of USD 83.93 per year I should now pay them a staggering 174.99 for vague promises about improvements. What happened to "make your product good, THEN take good money"? 🤔 I found the old price was over the top already. But the new price really takes the biscuit. If you organize several groups with lots of events, maybe even commercially, such a price may be justifiable. If you organize a meetup that causes you effort, but does not challenge you too much (so that you can harvest positivity as a ROI, at least), the price may be acceptable. But in my case, this seems to be the end of the line 🤷♂️. Especially because it is supposed to be a hobby thing for me. That means I wouldn't want it to be sponsored by default, because that comes with dependencies and expectations ⛓. So, how to carry on? I'm not sure if migrating to any other platform would be a real alternative, and I guess that's what Meetup.com bets on. At the same time it seems to me that this immense price increase is their last hope. The platform has been neglected for years; you can tell by the tiny bit of evolution and its sloth and sloppiness. I wonder if there will be alternatives and how other organizers see the topic. Good I know some to ask. What's your situation and what do you think about the price increase and possible alternatives, Uliana Cáceres 🇺🇦, Jewgenij "Jeff" Steinhart, Jörn Bernhardt, Wolfram Kriesing, Jennifer Zeiser, 👨💻 Anton Cáceres, Florian Rappl?
