A great event and report. If Government policies are to be effective they have to address the “most significant pension-related risk” – pension (in)adequacy. I applaud Chris Wagstaff and Andrew Brown for explicitly highlighting DC is a poor substitute for DB and that outcomes are at odds with many savers unrealistic expectations.  Many believe they are doing the right thing: auto–enrolled at a rate set by government, invested into defaults that provide value for money, select default retirement pathways (also value for money) and yet find themselves in relative poverty at retirement compared to their working life and potentially even below the PLSA minimum retirement standard. This is not just an issue for those beginning to save for their pension today and cannot simply be solved by increasing minimum contributions to 12% (which should happen asap anyway). It will impact those who have not benefited from DB or auto-enrolment since their 20’s including many who retire within the next 10 years. Policymakers need to understand and act now to plan for the impact this will have on public finances from increased reliance on benefits and the need to house those in retirement who can no longer afford their own place to live.
