The outdated way of evaluating racehorses: • Focus only on flashy looks • Ignore leg alignment and hoof health • Pick based on speed stats alone All that hard work for bad investments and injured horses? Here's the new path: • Start by evaluating the horse's balance • Check leg alignment for potential issues • Focus on hoof health and smooth movement Here's how to get started: • Learn the basics of conformation (balance, legs, hooves) • Visit a racetrack and watch horses walk and trot • Talk to trainers and ask about any visible flaws Making smart racehorse investments is hard, but worth it.

The Importance of the Horse's Back As we constantly remind people, horses are not designed to be ridden, so we must make a considerable effort to understand the impact of our decisions on how we do it. When it comes to the horse's back, there are a few things to consider: A horse, being a flight animal, has a natural instinct to hollow or tense the back when in flight mode. When we add equipment and weight to their backs without preparing them in their ability to carry us without hollowing, then we invite problems. The Longissimus dorsi is an essential muscle to be knowledgeable about as it is an essential part of the mechanism that allows for healthy posture in riding. Just like humans, horses can develop compensatory patterns if there is tension or discomfort in the back which, over time can lead to issues in the SI, hocks, suspensory ligaments and more. Learning how to put together and monitor a whole horse/whole rider program requires significant knowledge of their behavior, biomechanics, anatomy and more. This is the journey for those who are seeking to be good riders and advocates for their horses. This is the journey we invite you on as we gather the evidence and research that can provide the framework for what works for you and your horse.
