Japan is making significant strides in the transition to alternative fuels with exciting developments in this space. ➡️ The government recently announced a landmark ¥3 trillion yen "contracts-for-difference" subsidy program to accelerate the uptake of ammonia. ➡️ NYK Line is retrofitting the Sakigake, originally an LNG-powered tugboat, for ammonia propulsion. Operating this first-of-a-kind vessel will provide new understanding on ammonia handling and engine performance. ➡️ Plans are also underway for NYK to build ammonia-fueled medium gas carrier (AFMGC). As Japan readies itself for large-scale ammonia use, we hope our work in this space can help inform foundational safety and operational guidelines for safe ammonia bunkering. 📍#LNGShipbuilding📍  ✅ #Wärtsilä has revealed it will supply 🤝 engines, fuel gas supply system and thrusters for two 2️⃣ new RoPax ferries being built for French operator La #Méridionale, a subsidiary of French shipping heavyweight #CMA #CGM. ✅ #Wärtsilä will supply 👉 two 12-cylinder, one 10-cylinder and one 8-cylinder Wärtsilä 31DF engines. The ships will be powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG) 💧. ✅ The vessels, which have been specifically designed to minimize emissions 💭, are to be built at the China Merchants Jinling Shipyard (Weihai) 📌. HIP completes first STS Liquid Cargo Operation Hambantota International Port (HIP) has completed its first commercial ship-to-ship (STS) transfer operation for liquid cargo, marking another major milestone in the port’s expanding capabilities. The operation, carried out in collaboration with Singapore-based company Shipload Maritime to facilitate Laugfs vessel ‘Gas Challenger,’ highlights HIP’s commitment to becoming a key player in liquid cargo handling within the region. In this landmark operation, HIP facilitated the transfer of 3,170 metric tons (MT) of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) from vessel IVAN6 to vessel GAS CHALLENGER, the latter operated by Laugfs Holdings. This operation comes at a crucial time, as LPG demand continues to outpace supply, and the transfer was expedited to support distribution to the Laugfs facility in Colombo. The partnership with Shipload Maritime enables HIP to offer STS services that were previously only accessible in the Maldives in this region. HIP’s STS services now make Sri Lanka a viable alternative for liquid cargo transfers, opening up a new chapter for the port whose expanding service offerings continue to meet growing needs of the region’s energy and cargo sectors. Purus' latest commissioning service operation vessel (CSOV) newbuild has been launched at VARD shipyard in Romania. The Purus Chinook vessel is scheduled to join the company's fleet in the second quarter of 2025 and will immediately begin its contract with Vestas to support their #offshorewind operations. VesselsValue released its annual list of the top 10 shipowning nations based on total vessel asset value, with the U.S. ranking in 4th place once again. Here's a quick look: Japan retains the top spot with a strong showing across LNG, LPG, and vehicle carrier sectors. China, the leader in vessel count, boasts the largest bulker fleet. Greece maintains its position as the third-largest shipowning nation with the highest-valued tanker fleet. The US remains dominant in the cruise ship sector. Singapore retains fifth place with a notable LPG fleet value increase. Hong Kong emerges as a newcomer, ranking 10th due to significant investment in the bulker sector.

📍#LNGShipbuilding📍 ✅ Russia’s First Domestically Built LNG Carrier Begins Sea Trials 🥇 ✅ In a significant step to expand Russia’s domestic shipbuilding portfolio 📈 the Zvezda shipyard has completed work on its first LNG vessel 🥇. Ice-capable gas carrier #Aleksey #Kosygin departed from the yard near Vladivostok for sea trials on December 25. It is the first LNG carrier completed by a Russian yard 🎯, though key parts of the vessels were constructed in South Korea. ✅ The vessel will become part of the fleet to service Russia’s flagship LNG plant, Arctic LNG 2 🏗. The project has been plagued by delays due to escalating Western sanctions 🚨. Majority owner Novatek has struggled to secure ice-capable shipping capacity to service the project during winter. The company has thus far also been unable to find buyers for its LNG 💧. ✅ Following sea trials Aleksey Kosygin is expected to enter service in early 2025 🎊. South Korean firm Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) constructed the more challenging blocks of the vessel. The hull up to the forward cargo bulkhead was towed to Zvezda in October 2021. Classification society Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore (BV) has classified three new LNG bunker vessels, including one 18,600 cbm vessel for Ibaizabal at Hudong Zhonghua and two 18,000 cbm vessels for Hercules Shipping, the shipping arm of Peninsula at Hyundai Mipo Dockyard, which will be delivered from 2026.
