🤓 I was reading the excellent 2024 Predictive Ag Report from the good folks over at Pattern Ag when I came across this pearl of wisdom from Rob Hranac: “Our definition of productivity is simple: #Soil that maximizes agronomic output per unit of input. Researchers [and, I’ll add, pioneering #farmers] have shown that healthy soils natively resist pathogens and provide much of the fertility needed for plant growth. Because of this, our vision for measuring soil health is pragmatic: Healthy soils are productive soils. 👈 📢 In short, sustainability and productivity are aligned. We just need to give farmers a roadmap to determine how to build up their soils.” Bingo! This is the most excellent aspect of this whole business of working with, not against, life in the soil. Done right, it enhances #fertility, #resilience to stress, water efficiency, crop quality, resistance to pests and pathogens, and reduces production costs and labor. 👏 👏 👏 🌱Ian and Di Haggerty on sandy, semi-arid land in Australia have fostered soil life and thus gone 18 years without employing NPK, fungicide, and pesticide on thriving fields after a gradual and judicious transition of rebuilding the soil. 🌱Nick Vos, cover cropping and working with broad spectrum inocula like Holganix 800+, has roots and saprophytic #fungi five feet deep (at a 1:1 F:B ratio!), structuring soil to take in and store rain in dry West Kansas. 🌱Blake Matthews out in Idaho, working with Redox Bio-Nutrients, is thriving and winning awards with an attentively refined biological management program that is delivering accumulating gains to soil health while eliminating the use of foliar insecticides on potatoes and sugar beets. Rob nailed this. Farmers ought not be presented with a choice between sustainability and profitable production. ¿Porqué no los dos? 🤠 — By the way, the word “sustainability” is a word with baggage and political connotations. Even I have a certain emotional ambivalence about it. How might they be used to build a more sustainable future? On the final day of the NAPB 2024 in Saint Louis, my colleague Kathryn Grant from AbacusBio will be presenting some trailblazing work on the role that #sustainability traits might play in a more robust, forward-thinking selection process. One that considers our future impact on: 💧 Water supply and health 🧪 Non-renewable fertilizer usage 🌍 Mitigation of greenhouse gases 🌫️ Acidifying gases 🌾 Land use It's a critical moment to start thinking about these topics in agriculture.
