The Faculty of Sport and Exercise Medicine UK (FSEM) welcomes Lord Darzi’s report on the state of the NHS in England. This report confirms the vulnerable state the NHS is in whilst acknowledging the compassion and care that remains at the heart of the staff within the organisation. It confirms that Musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions are one of the largest causes of work prevention across the UK and that our population are living with poorer health and more long-term conditions. Many of these conditions, including MSK problems, are both treatable and preventable. The potential benefits of physical activity in the prevention and management of chronic disease are clear. Preventative healthcare aimed at increasing physical activity would help reduce to the growing pressure on existing NHS services. Lord Darzi’s recommendations include improved multi-disciplinary working, more community delivered care and empowering patients to take control in their care. Approaches towards this are addressed in the published FSEM workforce planning document, which recommends an increase in SEM consultants, specialist training posts and increased SEM involvement in commissioning MSK services nationally. The Faculty are also supportive of the Arthritis and Musculoskeletal Alliance (ARMA), who also welcomed this publication, and the government’s commitment to a reformation and implementation of a long-term NHS plan.

Key issues include: Staffing Shortages: Critical vacancies in laboratory positions are putting immense pressure on existing staff. Resource Limitations: Outdated equipment and insufficient resources are hindering the efficiency and accuracy of laboratory tests. Impact on Patient Care: These challenges could lead to delays in diagnosis and treatment, directly affecting patient outcomes. As we strive for excellence in healthcare, it is crucial to address these gaps. Collaborative efforts from healthcare providers, policymakers, and the community are needed to ensure that laboratory medicine can continue to support the region's health needs effectively. • ALL ABOARD PROJECT AIMS TO IMPROVE PALLIATIVE HEALTHCARE • ciTechCare recently received funding from the Foundation for Science and Technology to train and empower caregivers of patients with palliative needs and improve the quality of life and well-being of patients through the ALL ABOARD - Access family caregiving needs as bridge for palliative care-in-place. The ALL ABOARD’s purpose is to boost the ‘PC-in-place’ imperative, helping caregivers in their daily care preparedness for end-of-life care and reducing adverse effects for family caregivers (FCs). It is expected to improve their health and competence to care, minimizing the consumption of hospital health resources, while attending to patients’ preferences. The project will last 18 months and will be developed by the Polytechnic University of Leiria, together with the University of Navarra, the Hospital da Luz Porto and the Association for Research and Development of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon, under the coordination of Carlos Laranjeira, principal investigator of the project. +info: https://lnkd.in/dWYG4HRe #palliativecare #caregivers #allaboard #careinplace #needs

These insights bring us closer to enhancing genetic counseling and providing better support to individuals facing these challenges. Collaborating with Dr. Rima Slim, Dr. @Teruko Taketo, and Dr. Jacek Majewski team has been an inspiring journey. Knowing that this work has the potential to help patients and families struggling with infertility fills me with immense gratitude and motivation.
