Insights from the Field: Reflections on Livelihoods’ Impact in #Sumatra, Indonesia   Sumatra Island exemplifies the global challenge of balancing nature conservation with local livelihood enhancement. Over the past 50 years, vast monoculture plantations have replaced rich biodiversity, yet millions of smallholders have been lifted out of poverty. How do we reconcile these two realities?   Recently, Livelihoods President Bernard Giraud returned from visiting three of our projects in Sumatra, where we're addressing these dual challenges. Since 2009, Livelihoods has partnered with local NGOs and businesses to foster sustainable solutions, from restoring mangroves damaged by the 2004 tsunami to supporting smallholder palm oil growers and launching an ambitious agroforestry project to protect Leuser Park. Bernard reflects on the progress made: smallholders are increasingly adopting sustainable practices like composting and agroforestry, moving away from reliance on chemical inputs. There’s a growing convergence between public and private sectors to protect nature while creating economic opportunities for local communities.   Our approach? Building strong coalitions, staying grounded in field realities, and innovating financially to scale sustainable practices. While the challenges are significant, our 15 years of experience show that real transformation is possible. We're teaming up with Acorn to strengthen climate resilience and improve livelihoods for Rainforest Alliance Certified coffee farmers in Vietnam. ☕ This project brings together two Rainforest Alliance Certified coffee businesses—Vinhhiep Company Limited and Tin Thanh Dat Joint Stock Company—to support 1,500 farmers. There's a little dim sum restaurant near the Flower Market in Hong Kong, which has the best steamed prawn dumplings on the planet*. But as I gobble up these "har gow" as they are known locally, I've often wondered where the prawns come from and whether they are sustainably sourced. Sadly, I assume not. But that could be about to change, with news that the Blue Revolution Fund has raised €93 million (~US$100 million) to advance sustainable aquaculture. Aquaculture is the fastest-growing form of food production on the planet, with around three billion people around the world depending on well-managed fisheries and aquaculture. And while food production accounts for one-third of greenhouse gas emissions globally, the good news is that when aquaculture is done right, it can be one of the lowest-impact sources of food.   The Blue Revolution Fund, founded in 2021 by Hatch Blue and The Nature Conservancy, aims to advance emerging solutions in sustainable aquaculture farms and technologies, measuring progress against six impact metrics that deliver biodiversity, climate, and livelihood benefits in support of TNC’s 2030 goals.   Ultimately, we’ve designed the fund to set the gold standard for sustainable aquaculture investing that can be adopted by the broader market. We’ll partner with Hatch Blue to review all investments proposed to the Fund and will be responsible for upholding its environmental and social management system.    A game-changing project, with a hugely successful investment round. How can we support smallholder #livelihoods while sustaining a #deforestationfree supply chain? Musim Mas is the local implementer of a 10-year project in North Sumatra, focused on empowering 2,500 independent smallholder farmers, regenerating 8,000 hectares of degraded land, and restoring 3,500 hectares of local biodiversity. In collaboration with SNV and ICRAF (International Centre for Research in Agroforestry), we’ve provided extensive training in Best Management Practices, #RegenerativeAgriculture, Agroforestry, Institutional and Business Development, and Financial Literacy. Dedicated brands and Livelihoods Venture (L3F) teams have worked closely with farmers, offering individual coaching and fostering peer exchange. 3 years into the project, L3F has seen a remarkable increase in the adoption of sustainable agricultural practices - rising from 20% to 50-90%.
